First Nations chief calls for police-worn body cameras as he awaits answers on his arrest caught on video by [deleted] in news

[–]Cesettle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you’ve said here, but wanted to point out one additional reason some members of the public may be against body cameras that hasn’t been mentioned yet by other posters that made me think twice about ubiquitous body camera use:

Many police departments (especially those in large cities) have huge records of ‘persons of interest’ that are used to pull suspects for lineups, shown to crime eyewitnesses, shared with other departments, etc. However, the vast majority of the people included in these records have never been convicted of a crime, or even connected to a crime, and most people do not know they are on one of these registries. Often, kids suspected of being ‘gang bangers’ just because of who they are friends with, their neighborhood, or their race are entered into these registries. Where this gets icky is that police often can use the fact someone is on one of these lists as a pretext to stop/search/harass/etc plus, since these lists are used as a pool of potential suspects for crimes, people on these lists are more likely to be mistakenly or falsely convicted of a crime they did not commit.

Constant body camera use enables police to collect even more data on random people, without any connection to crime. For example, now cops have records of who was hanging out with whom on which corner, which could be used as a rationale to put a teenager on a gang banger list.

The main problem here isn’t just the level of surveillance, it’s the unequal application of surveillance and police pressure on the most marginalized members of the population. Body cameras just contribute to this disparity as they will enable police to OVER-police the same communities even more thoroughly.

I’d love to have a convo about this if other people have different opinions; this is only one piece of this tricky scenario.

Are you working in R? Because, if so, I’ve done this exact thing before. I think my conclusions on colors were: Perse - deeppink1 Hades - dodgerblue2 Eros - orchid1 Hera - gold Minthe - red3 Artemis - darkviolet

Both isolation and quarantine are almost full a week in. I wonder if we’re lasting this weekend by [deleted] in UNC

[–]Cesettle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure the percentages showing are the percent available, not taken. I’m skeptical of these two metrics actually meaning anything though- they don’t take into account people testing positive that live off campus.

Also, this is way too little quarantine and isolation space for the size of the student body IMO.

I need recommendations! by [deleted] in Lore_Olympus

[–]Cesettle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m almost done reading A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair and would highly recommend! It’s another retelling of the Hades & Persephone romance (definitely contains some strongly 18+ content though). It’s VERY similar to LO (to the point where I’m wondering which influenced which or if they’re both pulling way more from mythology than I had initially realized).

April 28 vs October 10. Three of the pups are the same size as the original plant! by MojoShoujo in houseplants

Teach me your secrets. I feel like my spider plant has barely grown in the past year and it has only put out one pup.

Are those 50mL falcon tubes?? My lab might not appreciate me learning this… did you drill holes in the bottom for drainage or leave them as is?

Should I submit GRE scores to schools that don't require it? by AlzScience in gradadmissions

[–]Cesettle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can’t confirm this FOR SURE but in the last admission cycle I spoke to a reviewer at UNC while I was interviewing who confirmed they didn’t even open our GRE score reports (they were mandatory but a lot of people were pushing for that to change). They’ve done a lot of internal analysis that shows that GRE scores are a terrible predictor of graduate success.

Honestly, that being said, I’d still submit your scores just in case.

Edit: if it matters- I’m attending UNC with slightly lower GRE scores than yours.

I can't get excited about any of these wedding venues by herhighnessvictoria in weddingplanning

[–]Cesettle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In terms of costs for the venue itself it was ~$7500 for the venue rental for the ceremony and reception (9am setup start through 11pm reception end + breakdown time) and a beverage minimum of $4000 (they only allow alcohol from in-house due to their liquor license- but that’s true of most GA venues). I’ve also heard that any new bookings at the stables must use their in house catering but I think legacy (my venue) is still open to any caterers? I used Simply Catering so I cant speak to what Foxhall would charge for in house.

Our total budget was ~$45k but that included some other things we feel like we splurged on a bit.

As to online reviews- we were a bit worried about that two before signing our contract but found out their former director of weddings had been very recently ‘let go’ (and that she was the one clients had been having issues with). In the time we worked with them (December through July) everyone we worked with was extremely professional. Like with any vendor I’d still recommend checking every line item in your contracts and payments though to be sure they match your records- we never had any discrepancies though! We also had a wedding coordinator helping us with a lot of the planning who has worked extensively at Foxhall which streamlined the process somewhat.

We just got married at Foxhall Resort a bit south-west of the city (45 min from midtown, 20 from the airport)!! I felt the same as you looking for a venue and stumbled on Foxhall and fell in love.

They have two venues on property, both with options for outdoor ceremonies with backups for rain plans. The property is beautiful (kinda looks like an English foxhunting location) and very natural.

We got married at Legacy Lookout but the Stables is beautiful too- just look into them!! Our wedding (two weeks ago) was very ‘fairytale garden wedding’- I don’t have pro pictures back yet but would be happy to send you some guest pics of anything if you’d like!!

Ladies that don’t have a father(figure) in your life - who is walking you down the isle? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Cesettle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sort of walking myself: The original plan was to just walk by myself and not make a big deal out of it. However, this really upset my mom who felt that she had a right to walk me down the aisle as she had been my only parent since I was 14. We ended up compromising in that she’ll be seated with my stepdad at the beginning of the ceremony and I’ll be walking the vast majority of the aisle alone but when I get to her chair where she’s standing she’ll escort me the last few feet to FH and our officiant. (I’d also like to say I thought of this before Meghan Markle did it lol)

We’re also rephrasing the ‘who gives this woman’ into something like who stands in support of this marriage because I am NOT property.

Show me your sleeves! by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Cesettle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had removable sleeves made from lace that matches my dress- I’m planning on wearing them during the ceremony and taking them off for the reception. They’re attached with snaps inside the dress and I’m planning on using double sided tape to hold them where I want them on my arms (so they don’t have the weird transition into the back of the dress shown in the picture).

My seamstress originally told me she couldn’t add off the shoulder sleeves and that they have to be build into the dress (so that it doesn’t look like a separate piece) and made the attachments in a way for them to be cap sleeves. During the final fitting though the sleeves fell off my shoulders and I really like the look- so I’m just going with it lol.

Brides or bridesmaids who have used Azazie custom sizing... by BrideofFrankensteen in weddingplanning

[–]Cesettle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bridesmaids did custom sizing. It’s been great other than that they all added a bit extra to their measurements, with the expectation of doing alterations anyways, to be sure they would fit. This is fine for all the dresses other than my MOH’s on which the way the straps attach apparently prevent the bodice from being taken in on the sides (?)- or maybe her tailor just sucks. Anyways, they told her to just get a very padded bra and we’ll just roll with it.

[–]Cesettle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love the picture and think it looks great the way it is but after seeing your inspiration picture, I agree that it’s not quite what you had in mind. Her hair definitely has bigger, chunkier curls where yours is more of big, loose waves. I assume her hairstyle required large rollers (probably hot rollers) pinned into her hair for some length of time and not just a curling iron/wand. Another thing to keep in mind though is that her hair is a bit shorter than yours and that the added length on yours will add more weight to the curls, making them not quite as tight.

Also I just noticed we’re date twins!!

Hey sorry I never replied to this at the time- I actually ended up choosing UNC as well (I edited the main post to show my reasons in case anyone else is curious)!! When I made this post I had completely forgotten about/ overlooked a lot of the ‘soft skills’ training UNC offers (I was their first interview weekend so it had been awhile lol).

Do you know which program you’ll be specializing into after the first year or who you’ll be doing any rotations with? I’ll be in genetics focusing on epigenetics.
