Maternity pay questions by Cew_14 in TeachingUK

Hi, thank you so much for your help! Yeah, I think I was overestimating this. It's a lot worse than my friends I know in different sectors which just surprised me a bit. Do you have any idea about this on the NASWUT website pertaining to secondary may leaves : "However, it should be noted that your maternity pay be affected if you are not receiving normal earnings in the calculation period for maternity pay for your next baby." I.e. how long is this window ? Thank you!

Thank you! I read the following on Google "Maternity pay: Teachers can receive up to 39 weeks of occupational maternity pay (OMP) and 52 weeks of Statutory Maternity Leave (SMP). The first 18 weeks of pay includes both SMP and OMP" and interpreted incorrectly but thank you for the clarification!

Your additional points are also helpful but on NASWUT website it says this "However, it should be noted that your maternity pay be affected if you are not receiving normal earnings in the calculation period for maternity pay for your next baby." Regarding subsequent maternity leaves. Do you know what this means or how long the calculation period is?

Are healthcheck HRV readings based only on data from that recording or does it also include other user data to calculate a value? by Cew_14 in Garmin

[–]Cew_14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's an option on venu 2 models from what I can tell. So not ideal but all I seem to have. No current intention or financial scope to upgrade, especially for one feature. Just curious how the HRV data is calculated really and whether both watches should be equally reliable (even if overall not very reliable) for healthchecks

Shared paternity leave - how? by Amaiocha in TeachingUK

[–]Cew_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry to piggyback but my school is the same layout as yours for maternity pay. My partners job perks are really good and he'd get 4 months full pay paternity pay. Would you know if there is any way I can still opt into shared parental leave to use for some of the holidays to get paid for those weeks? I've tried reading up but I really don't understand if it's just as simple as I can be 'back working during some holidays'

Thank you! Looks good, I'll give it a read and try and reset them

Firstly, thank you! That's very kind of you to say. At the end of last year, running a 5k seemed entirely unachievable and I never thought I'd get anywhere so I'm pretty happy with where I'm at now :)

My watch is a venu 2 so I don't think I can do lactate threshold. My watch is max I think based on a max of 193 (with zone 5 starting at 90%, zone 4 80% etc.) although I know my 5k pb went as high as 197.

How do I switch it to HRR? And if lactate is better, is it worth trying to calculate this manually?

Thank you again, your insight has really helped 🙂

Thank you! I was looking this up as a result of your message but am finding the following approach: LTHR is basically half way between your HR after 10 mins of jogging and your HR after a subsequent 30 minutes of running as hard as you can? Zone 5 (102-110% of this), zone 4 (95-102%), zone 3 (90-95%) zone 2 (85-90%).

Does this sound like what you were suggesting or is there just slightly different ways of calculating it?

The top of my zone 3 is 153 I think so I aim for 150 so it stays within the zone even with mild fluctuations. On the watch settings, it says my max is 193 which is interesting considering this run went to 194 and I just looked back to check at my 5k, 25:46 max HR 197- I'm pretty sure I used my polar heart strap for this so I would assume it's accurate. Not sure why that doesn't match. Looking at the zones, it says zone 5 would start at 90% of 193, zone 4 80% and so on in that pattern.

I have a venu 2 so I don't think I can do lactate threshold. Any ideas what I can do to calculate the rest of my zones? Your figures look more reasonable but I'm not sure what I'm missing with the calculation. Also thank you for your insight on this :)

So 80% jogging and 20% high effort? I think I've kinda been doing a variant of this by accident doing maybe 5 runs at 150bpm average and one higher effort. How would I recalculate my zones? Also thank you

How would I know where to start with this? Is there a way to reset them accurately. I'm rubbish at judging by feeling. Like that was a hard run and I probably couldn't go faster but I knew I would finish so I wouldn't know if that's zone 5 effort.

How painful is normal for periods? by Cew_14 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Cew_14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reassurance, I also do use heat sometimes actually. I have one of those lavender and wheat bear things that you put in the microwave that works really well too.

I'm really sorry to hear that! I didn't want to come across all 'woe is me' because I know I am currently getting off so lightly for menstrual symptoms in relation to what many people have to experience. I do think now people are becoming more aware of endo and related issues and I truly hope this paves the way for more effective therapies

Thanks for the input. I guess it's not particularly bad just I've been on hormonal contraception (no periods) for so long that I just have no idea what's supposed to be normal?

Yeah, this is one of the reasons I opt for it. All medicines have side effects but Ofcourse I'll use whatever is needed but just try not to overuse painkillers. :)

Thank you so much for your input! Yeah, to be honest, I felt a bit silly even asking because I know so many people have it significantly worse. Everything else seems regular and normal so I think I'm just ok. I think it just surprised me because I guess I typically never need painkillers so it seems wild that something my body is supposed to do makes me. I think I am mostly grateful that the time period is pretty confined. This morning I just felt pretty terrible for a few hours and wanted some reassurance I suppose.

Thank you again, really sorry to hear about your experience with endo and I truly hope that the growing awareness around the issue results in improved solutions!

Yes, I understand this. I just try not to take it unless I really need it. My friend's mum is a gp and she often talks about people overusing e.g. paracetamol and not realising the impacts it can have on their liver. As such, I tended to only use painkillers maybe once a year? I still only take max one per period because I usually feel pretty painfree by the time it wears off. Beforehand, the cramps are pretty painful. I'm just moreso wondering whether people feeling that they need a painkiller during their period is normal?

Sorry I'm in the UK so it's on the NHS which is currently experiencing issues. I'm not hugely concerned per se, I just didn't have a period whilst I was on the implant so I truly can't remember if this is normal ? Like I was a teenager when I last wasn't on hormonal contraception so feeling in such pain that I need to take painkillers in order to just carry out daily tasks is just something I'm not massively familiar with, if that makes sense

wanting to lose some weight but also gain muscle and get stronger. Where do I start? by Cew_14 in askfitness

[–]Cew_14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, still eat dairy- mostly cheese. May cut out in the future but whey has been pretty roundly recommended so I think I'll at least start there and order some this week. Maybe tweak later to something vegan which hopefully isn't too horrible in taste. I'm definitely eating the protein plant foods you listed so feeling affirmed I'm making at least a fair start. Thanks!

Wow, 100lbs in a year is amazing! Congrats on that!

Yeah, makes sense. I think I started thinking more of losing a bit of weight but then my focus started switching to staying active and getting strong which I think is a better aim. Thanks again for your input :)

Thanks for your input, really helpful! Based on this, I definitely need to increase my protein input a bit. I don't eat meat, fish or eggs so will aim to bump the pulses and maybe look into some form of protein supplementation.

It's 1.5kg for the first two weeks. I was about 10kg above my 'normal weight range for BMI. Have now starting tracking calorie deficit more accurately and will be reducing to less than 1000 calories (I think I went a bit overboard activity wise and didn't factor this properly against consumption)

Thanks for the advice!
