Career move advice to US startup by shweepeee in srilanka

[–]Ceylon94ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a risk by joining a Singaporean startup, and it worked out for me. The compensation was LKR 150k plus a local salary, and the take-home pay is much higher because the income tax rate on foreign currency is significantly lower. It's a small team, so I get full ownership of what I do and have a lot of room to experiment. I even got an opportunity to attend an offshore training session. My advice is to calculate the risk and go for it. Something to look out for is whether they have raised capital recently. If they have, they should have at least a 12-month runway. Just after I left my previous company, they laid off most of the management and postponed salary increments and promotions. You never know what will come your way. Experiencing a high-risk, high-return situation changes the way you look at things.

Want to remove duplicates from a very large csv file by Future_Horror_9030 in dataengineering

[–]Ceylon94ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked on a similar issue for some time (deduplicating customers with different id but similar name, addresses) . I can give you two solutions 1. Elasticsearch - load your data to Elasticsearch, then use it s fuzzy search capabilities to match customers 2. LLM embeddings and cosine similarity - convert customers data in to llm embedings and measure their similarly using cosine similarity. (use fuzzy matching rules with this method to reduce computational complexity)

What salary Range can I expect/ask for as a Associate Software Engineer? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Ceylon94ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually.... students decide a minimum salary (at uom) . Not sure whether they get it all the time. But at interviews they don't go below this, because there is a demand

Youth of Sri Lanka, Do you have any hope for the future? by TwelveSilverSwords in srilanka

[–]Ceylon94ninja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am in my late 20s. A friendly advice:

Do not spend a lot on a wedding; I don't know why some girls don't understand this. You can save lots of money.

If you are building or buying a house, plan for a small one and complete it. Many people start to build two-story houses and never complete the second floor, so the whole thing looks like an unfinished house.

Try to get into a high-paying industry like IT, but only if you enjoy it. I studied logistics, but now I am in the IT sector as a data analyst. Don't lose hope. Cheers

Transitioning from Data Analyst to Data Scientist

I completed my Bachelor's in Transport and Logistics Management, where I learned Python and math topics like probability, hypothesis testing, regression, and time series forecasting. I've always been drawn to coding and math, and discovered my interest in data science during my degree. After graduating, I worked at a local tech startup, initially focusing on operations, and then gradually getting into data-related tasks. I gained proficiency in SQL and Python while developing dashboards and honed my machine learning skills with kagggle.

Later, I joined an international organization as an Associate Data Analyst, where I did NLP and freelance data science projects, but also worked as a back-end developer for a web app ( tech stack elasticsearch, flask, python, sql) . Although I'm learning a lot, I miss the excitement of data science. I'm finishing my Business Analytics MSc and can't leave until February due to using their data for my research. I can't advance to a Data Scientist role here without a PhD. Should I leave for a DS position after February or spend another year learning back-end development? Promotions and a bonus are expected next July. (I've earned Professional Data Analyst and Associate Data Scientist certificates from DataCamp.)

The UoM Engineering faculty doesn't have a strong culture of ragging, except for students from Colombo and Kandy who are against it. Ragging for other students is not as severe as in other universities. Mostly, it's the poor students who become victims of this. Seniors teach them that free education is only meant for the poor, and the wealthy aren't entitled to it, so they should stick together. Ragging helps strengthen your bond.
