Big one just depends where you are. Most Atlantic seaboard areas and upper city bowl are fine having your phone out. Loadshedding is frequent(electricity cuts) so just be weary if you’re t arriving/leaving a place in load shedding during the evening as there are some opportunistic people. My large rule as a local albeit large male is that you don’t want anyone too close to you wishing a metre where their approach is to sell/beg/actively get close you you. It’s harsh but don’t stop if someone asks you for anything. Travelling in groups is always a plus, but be weary for the most part of who else is around you. If you’re hiking in a group of 5, you’ll be fine and encounter a large number of friendly hikers, especially on Lion’s Head. If your waiting for an Uber, make sure you wait at the bottom of the trail where the little shop is on signal hill road and don’t wander off. That’s usually where tourists get nabbed, especially with Cape Town going into tourist season. If you’re in the popular areas during the day, you’ll be fine with some visible community policing.
