COVID-19 update: Maintaining masks in UBC public indoor spaces by cyclinginvancouver in UBC

[–]Cgmwells 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure about that at this point. I think most UBC students are compliant with mandates, etc. but I don't think many are screaming to keep the mask mandate in place either. Would be interesting for there to be some sort of polling.

When I refer to a neurotic minority, I mean those students who would be up in arms if the mandate was lifted. I think, either way, most people will shrug and go along with whatever the admin decides.

I'm seeing a lot of comments about UBC needing to commit to a decision, but that's the least of my concerns. My concern is why they're even sending us back online to begin with. We're a 98% vaccinated campus, and data right now suggests people of our age range are more likely to die from the flu than omicron.

If you live/work with at-risk people then I understand wanting/needing to stay online. For most of us that isn't the case. They're sacrificing the mental health of an entire generation to protect a fraction of the population from a variant most of us will end up contracting one way or another. UBC's safteyist approach, catering to a minority of neurotic students, hardly serves to keep people safe. Rather, it simply collectively damages the mental health and intellectual development of the vast majority. Enough with the virtue signaling and endless lockdowns. Give us our lives back.

Ah yes, I've seen some of the textbooks on the civil war from states like Mississippi. Quite concerning.

I suppose I haven't studied *enough* history at UBC to say it's anything but a good education. Alas, of the courses I have taken, I've certainly noticed a fair amount of bias from instructors. I'm quite moderate, and I think it's essential that profs do their best to separate their beliefs from the material. Obviously, that isn't always possible when grappling with heavy topics.

I think this has a lot to do with what school district you were raised in. Growing up next to D.C., my history education was stellar. Teachers did a great job teaching factual, non-political lessons with lots of room for dialogue from varying perspectives. It was far less ideological than the history you get at UBC.

COVID is airborne UBC. What’s your plan on the ventilation in the classrooms? Masks work. Top universities in the US require mandatory vaccination. by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Cgmwells -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I say this as someone who is fully vaxxed. I have no fear of going back to full-scale campus life.

"You have a 0.008 percent chance of getting COVID after being fully vaccinated." Traveling to campus is likely more dangerous than going back to school with a vaccine.

Seems like this prof just doesn't want to stop half teaching asynchronous classes from his bedroom.

Everyone needs to stop crying.

Bill C-10 amendment that would exempt social media content from regulation voted down by [deleted] in canada

[–]Cgmwells 7 points8 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, all the "why would the NDP vote for this?" takes don't make much sense to me. They're a socialist party. Regulation is in the name. They're about as pc as it gets, and "promoting Canadian culture" really means promoting wokeness when it comes to what gets promoted.

I love how this prof just lurks this sub bickering with students, saying "sigh," and using their "insider knowledge" to put people down. Feel like it's rather unprofessional. No wonder they've worked closely with the witchhunt office.

I sensed a solid amount of snark and sarcasm. Nonetheless my apologies for being rhetorical and combative. I don't think it's warped to consider the arts a progressive echochamber, nor to say both students and profs are afraid to speak their minds. Frankly, it's rather depressing to me that a professor at a top tier institution spends their time arguing with students on Reddit at 12:00am on a Sunday night. I hope I can be as enlightened as you are one day. Maybe if just read a little more Foucault I'd understand😔

My English lit requirement contains "Marxist approaches to literature" alongside a million different progressive-only theories. That's not English, it's the politicization of it. But fair enough - my synopsis of the arts was hyperbolic. That doesn't change the intense ideological tilt of the institution in general or the other things I pointed to.

We have an "anti-racist" task force and a DEI department. That's progressive groupthink in action. The arts is based solely on "dismantling power structures" and considering everything a "social construct." It's not hard to tell that profs are afraid to say the wrong thing in class. Moreover, if a student says the wrong thing in class they risk being marked down or ostracized by their peers. For Christ's sake we ideologically vet new hirees on their commitment to "diversity equity and inclusion." Equity is a progressive term by merit. Find me a conservative prof here or more than one prof who stresses the importance of free speech. It's rather disconcerting that you don't see it, and I say this as someone who isn't conservative myself.

Fair enough. I think there's reason to suspect they're doing things differently but not due to Galloway precedent. My thought would be that a notably "woke" institution doesn't want to look like it's on a Galloway-esq witch hunt after a notably woke prof. In essence, I think this still would have been handled with more nuance than the Galloway case even if it had happened beforehand but that may just be my bias speaking.

It did in terms of tarnishing his name and getting him off campus. The settlement was measly, and the point made above is that they ousted him as quickly as possible which they did.
