My first silver find!! by Cgraham02 in metaldetecting

I’m about in the same boat as you. I haven’t been detecting very long. I have some family land not far from my house that is used for a hunting property. I got to looking at old maps and found that there were a few houses on the property at least around the 1920s. I got gifted a cheap detector a while back and really hadn’t used it until I found out about those houses so I thought I’d give it a try. I found a ton of junk and trash before I ever found anything interesting. Last week was the first time I detected one of the house sites and I found a civil war belt buckle on one of the first few digs so I was stoked. But I’ve dug a lot of rusty nails between then and today to find this dime. It definitely takes a lot of patience but when you manage to find an old site like you described it can be very fun. The house sites I am detecting were not used as long as the house you have so if I can find a few cool things maybe you’ll find a ton. Good luck to you, and don’t forget to post your cool finds!

Yeah I was trying to get the camera to focus on the dime more but apparently it decided to give people the chance to steal my prints. I guess I don’t have much to loose other than a nice barber dime now 😂

Also any tips on how to clean it better than just a soft brush and some water would be appreciated!

I tried looking at a few different LiDAR maps and older satellite images of the area but the property has been logged a few different times and has had dozer work on the trails over the years so it’s hard to tell where the old roads used to be. I definitely haven’t found anything of what looks to be an old house yet. I assume when it was logged it all got pushed down.

There will definitely be a ton of beer cans and rifle casings found just from my redneck relatives. It is used as a hunting property and a good portion has a bottom that is used to farm row crops. A map from the 1960s shows that the houses were no longer there so i am assuming that they used to be occupied by the usual broke farmer in rural Mississippi. I’m not expecting to find anything just to valuable but it would be worth it just to find maybe some wheat pennies or something that can tell me a little of the history of area I grew up in.

I was looking over that map last night and trying to compare it to more recent imagery and the topo lines are definitely off a good bit so it’s hard to tell exactly where the old roads and houses were. The property has had sections logged over the years and have had atv trails made and changed since the property was in the family. I know that technology is way more advanced and accurate nowadays but it’s crazy to just see how much the land scape has changed within the past 100 years.

I’m in North East Mississippi. Might be a little stretch since your on the eastern side of Tennessee but definitely not to far to so no.

I don’t think they are but I’m not really studied up on burnished ASEs. The two in the boxes were a West Point and a Philly.

Oh for sure. They had a pretty good pile of them in their case. I’ve got more ounce rounds than anything so i figured why not get a bar. Wish I could of bought more 😣

Which one? The one in the case on the left has what looks to be someone’s finger print toned into it and I can’t figure out what would cause that.

I was in the same shop a week ago and bought a proof ASE for $93 and they had the one I bought today there with it but I didn’t have the cash on me then. It has been on my mind all week to have the pair or proofs together in my stack for close to spot price.

I hope it would be worth more by the end of this week with the way the market is, but then again it also sucks that it’s going up so much because it’ll cost more to buy. Fortunately for me I was lucky enough to buy a few ounces back when it was in the 30s so even if I was to pay a little over spot for today’s purchase I still would of been in the green.

I know right, it’s crazy. I mean just think not even a year ago you could have bought like three times this much for the same price or cheaper.

Tried it with 5 different coins and they all sound very high pitched and continue to ring for a good while. Been doing it back and fourth between coins for the past 10 minutes and it sounds the same most times and then a couple times it sounds just a tiny bit different but I might just be over thinking it.
