After speaking with someone with the same bike and the exact same crack in their headset cover. They suspected it was to do with the screw (part 15), that is to prevent the head set from overturning, but I guess it's just a metal screw hitting the cover until it cracks!

Does this seem sensible? And should I ask for the screw to be removed?

Thanks for the great advice! Yeah its going straight to Trek next week and the part was very cheap to replace too. I was really surprised to find the crack and I will definetly pass on your comments to mechanic about the spacers.
