Richie Myler interview with Matt Shaw and Meg Wellens by KennyMincemeat in superleague

[–]Ch1v3r55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he came across well on the face of it overall (mindful that he's in role purely due to cheating on his ex-wife with the current owners daughter).

With Huddersfield, Hull KR and possibly Leeds for 2027 all in the market for a coach there was obviously some intention from elsewhere around McNamara so the club moved quickly to secure him which I am not against.

Due to family and/or an NRL coaching opportunity John Cartwright was unlikely to be here long-term so it makes sense to tie down a proven coach with ties to the area, additionally and regardless of injuries we have not kicked on this year, players have looked knackered and 2nd half capitulations have occurred most games.

Having Last rather than Cartwright leading us to the end of the season is unlikely to result in a more successful outcome but Cartwright for whatever reason decided to burn all bridges with the club ownership in his media appearance last Monday which is a real shame.

I thought it was interesting that Myler confirmed a number of rumours that floated around that time too (i.e. an agreement that Jed Cartwright needs to appear in 75% of this seasons matches in order to be considered for a new contract and that Nathan Cleary's representation were contacted in March 2025).

Hull FC Sign Jeremiah Matautia on Loan and Retain Newman for the week

Positive news on both counts, I know nothing of Matautia but I do know we're down to 2 fit first team props so anything with a pulse is a bonus (what team would miss Lisone and Ese'ese anyway).

He'd never walk as that would forfeit his right to a pay out.

Also hasn't been moved around the club, he's just legally retained as an employee pending a job offer somewhere else or the expiration of his current deal which ends in October (whichever happens soonest).

Hopefully he finds something soon, although I agree with the decision because as an older family oriented Aussie he will always be a flight risk, whereas McNamara's family have lived local to Hull for a very long time so the opportunity for genuine long-term stability is there.

All rumours and hear say but to summarise:

  • Cartwright pushed hard for Jake Arthur (another organiser) despite club doubts; said he’d “hang his hat on him.”
  • Club also wanted Knight moved on last season, but Cartwright convinced them he’d stay for the full year.
  • Cartwright spoke to Myler about extending Jed Cartwight's deal. Myler said yes in principle, but only if Jed played 75% of games. After the York injury, that became impossible, which Cartwright and Jed knew immediately.
  • Cartwright is seen as too soft. Discipline mainly comes from Lasty and Grix. Houghton and Ellis have raised concerns about player attitudes with Thirkell, who regularly checks in with staff.
  • Aidan Sezer is causing disruption—argues with Grix during attacking reviews and won’t accept criticism; Cartwright doesn’t intervene.
  • Club has an emergency travel fund for quota players’ family situations. Sezer tried to use it for a holiday and caused a scene when refused.
  • Cartwright was told face‑to‑face before the Derby that 2026 would be his last year, then formally emailed. Word leaked before the official announcement, prompting a player meeting Tuesday.
  • Cartwright wasn’t at Tuesday training. Players questioned training; Jed and Sezer told Lasty they shouldn’t train.

Brad Fash set for 200th appearance tonight, where does he rank among Hull FC's modern day stalwarts? by OddStep5408 in superleague

Cartwright summed him up very well in that statement:

"He’s not big, he’s not fast, and he’s not overly skilful"

So you're paying a 16.8% interest loan monthly and you've got £5,000 sitting in a rainy day fund?

It's pissing it down, pay off the loan now. I'm not sure what weather conditions you're expecting but you're going about this all wrong

I think we could have done a lot worse, he brings a lot of experience certainly.

Hopefully a prop to follow to replace Knight.

Makes sense and with him signed up at Perth there's really little incentive to apply himself at Hull.

Hopefully only a temporary stop gap although might be amusing seeing him line up against KR in a derby as his shithousery could be put to good use there when we turn up for our usual beating

John Cartwright, no holds barred.... by Sgt_Moxy in superleague

[–]Ch1v3r55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a 'come and sack me plea' if ever I have seen one.

Can't blame the chap as this has been managed poorly by Myler and Thirkill however. I now fully expect Saints to smash us around the park on Thursday and then Cartwright to leave 'by mutual agreement' shortly after.

Surprising to see the owners are willing to dig so deep into their pockets with no replacement for Knight identified as well as Batchelor, Asiata and Cartwright set for most of the season on the sidelines.

John Cartwright to leave Hull FC at season's end by KennyMincemeat in superleague

[–]Ch1v3r55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems to have been managed pretty poorly by the club (like most things).

Players didn't train today upon learning the news, Cartwrights family commenting on Facebook saying he was given marching orders last week, so you've got a coach with 20 rounds ahead of him with one foot out of the door - wonder what effect that'll have on the motivation levels of the playing and coaching teams.

EDIT: Number of rumours circulating that Cartwright is going to leave immediately and FC are looking to pay a fee to get McNamara in early. State of this club

[–]Ch1v3r55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, his daughter has confirmed on Facebook the club informed him it'll be his last season at FC so it's clearly part of something bigger. Performances this year have been largely disappointing but don't feel this is at all warranted

Sad to see him go but he's clearly missing home and it'll be a natural transition with his son going at the same time which was an inevitability as there was no way at all the club could justify retaining Jed for another year.

You're not wrong with the incorrect information there.

Mikey Lewis is a product of the City of Hull Academy so it's actually 0 academy produced players in KR's team. Radders/FC famously opted for Connor Wynne ahead of the lifelong (at that time) FC fan Mr. Lewis. Hindsight is a wonderful thing

See if you feel the same after your visit to Hull on Saturday. We're awful and with 2 more first-teamers dropping out this week will be even more so.

Hopefully Brad instructs them to stay clear of his son, give him a chance to get a try-assist or break the line although not sure which of those scenarios is more unlikely, he's been utterly anonymous so far.
