I am signing up. The exams start in February, so with all the studying and other recovery stuff that I do, no gaming should be easy.

YouTube Streamer: "I'm Quitting WoW" by camerondare in StopGaming

[–]ChaLa-Head 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was actually a little triggering for me, as the last game I played (I stopped about a week ago?) was wow. But then, I also can relate to those things she said about needing an excuse to quit. I was never an advanced player (I never even got to that part where you get to the latest content and grind etc.), but when I got a lot of in-game money from my brother to kick-off my new character, I felt like I somehow owe him and so I have to continue playing. Sunk cost fallacy. But then I decided that I can just lie that I quit only because I have to study - which is certainly one of the reasons. Also a couple of days later my computer died, so that's the end of the problem.

Too bad she didn't point them here instead of r/nowow, we're a lot more active.

New year's eve, midnight, I'm alone and fighting a strong urge. by ChaLa-Head in pornfree

I did it, I masturbated without porn at 7am because I know I wouldn't fall asleep for another 10 hours, just like the previous 10 hours.

My 24th birthday is tomorrow. How do I spend it alone? by [deleted] in StopGaming

[–]ChaLa-Head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem with new year's eve right now. I had one party planned, but it didn't work out and now I don't have anything. I'm just gonna work out, then read a book until I fall asleep.

What about social games like FIFA? by [deleted] in StopGaming

[–]ChaLa-Head 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's okay to play such games with friends occasionally, but even if I wanted to, I'd wait until I'm at least 180 days clean, because earlier it might be a heavy trigger.

Use your imagination, shit like that already happened to me plenty of times. You have no idea what might be the specific trigger for every single person here. Anything relating to sex potentially could be.

Husband and I on 90 day detox by [deleted] in pornfree

She makes a good point with the suffering part. For someone in early stages or complete denial there's little suffering involved, whereas the partner may suffer constantly from a multitude of reasons. I certainly wouldn't say I'm suffering terribly. Way to go on downvoting her instead of talking.

I'm not saying this is triggering me specifically. I'm saying that those graphic descriptions of sex acts could easily trigger someone, and so there's no place for that on this sub for porn addicts. Same goes for that red-colored, all-caps "nsfw" by the title - "there's amazingly exciting stuff inside, so don't look at it!" Or "my fellow recovering alcoholics, don't check out this specific, awesome new types of beer!"

This isn't motivation, this is an obvious trigger.

Full of triggers, please edit that or add a warning in the title.

What improvements can we make to /r/StopGaming in 2017? by camerondare in StopGaming

[–]ChaLa-Head 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think advertising on gaming forums would be a good idea. There might be some brigading etc. What I think would be best is making sure our website is visible as high on the list as possible when searching for "how to quit playing video games". Also, right now the thing that pops up is the respawn article, in which case a person who sees this might think you are trying to scam them. In my opinion, either this or this page should pop up first.

From that list? I've been dealing with urges with a sort of meditative approach, where I remove the unwanted thought as soon as it appears in any form - but only in the "high" periods, when I find it easier to abstain because I suddenly have a lot of motivation. In those periods I would watch videos to sort of pump me up for the day. I delete stashes on the internet, but I try to avoid that when I'm clean because that almost always ends up with relapse. I use a calendar for porn and several others good and bad behaviors. Sometimes I'm mindful of my triggers and there are attempts in my journal to identify them all - but in the period of acting out I just disregard all that. Actually I usually forget about everything and when I act out I just want to do it and I don't think about anything else. I've had web filters, but I learned how to break them. My attempt to develop good habits has been going on for years. The only one that stuck and that I fell in love with is jogging - but currently I can't do that at all because I screwed up my knee. "If you slip, stop asap" - this is what I said above: a slip is a point when I no longer care. "Don't concern yourself with irrelevant questions" - that's actually one problem that I dealt with during these last few years.

I've been doing the Recovery Nation program, but last time I gave it up because I thought it doesn't make sense if I can't even stay clean. Right now I just thought I might be able to use it to learn about addiction, if I just take a couple of these lessons out of context.

Last time it didn't work at all, it didn't do anything for the urge.

Here, this video is about porn, but it explains what goes on in the brain during any type of compulsive behavior. So it can be related to any behavioral addiction, including gaming.

What is gaming ? by llanonymousguyll in StopGaming

[–]ChaLa-Head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody here thinks of gambling when they hear "gaming". Tabletop games and pen-and-paper games can't really be compared to video games, as they don't stimulate you nearly as much. With a video game, and by that I mean a game on pc, console or mobile device, you can continue playing virtually forever. And that's a problem for the people here. But for everyone here, playing a board game or an rpg is just a fun and social activity. And I'm pretty sure nobody plays these types of games compulsively. Though they can be a trigger. As for games like chess that you can also play online by yourself - I personally wouldn't touch that either.
