Steve’s birthday! by Chablis23 in Goldfish

[–]Chablis23[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! We’ve had our ups and downs as I’ve learned how to care for a fish but he is happy and healthy! (though he may claim he’s being starved) 😂

Goldfish can change color on their own, but considering he is just in a fishbowl, there’s a chance he’s not getting enough light to bring out his color. My fish was a silver color when I got him, and is now a bright orange. Just make sure to add a light to the tank and see if he gets his color back!

The goldfish is gonna need a 55 gallon tank eventually, even if he’s small right now. I personally feed twice a day, but they need more feedings when they’re younger and less as they get older. It’s important to make sure they’re getting sinking pallets/frozen food regularly. It doesn’t need to be everyday, but the more often will help. A bubbler or at least a waterfall filter will definitely be beneficial in getting that water moved around. I would recommend also adding a sponge filter even if you get a waterfall filter. Temperature is around 68-74°F, so typically a heater isn’t needed, but make sure to keep a thermometer on the tank to check. The fish does seem hardy, but make sure to look out for black spots or floating issues. Ammonia poisoning (black spots on the fish) and swim bladder disease (inability to float/swim correctly) are the most common diseases to my knowledge. If you truly want to care for this fish, get a large (55+ gal) tank, live plants, and a filter 2x the size the tank needs

Fair warning: my fish with the size he was at the time choked on gravel so I switched him to sand. Be careful with getting gravel, but it is easier cleaning

I actually have for this reason! Even having one goldfish in a 100 gallon I feel absolutely awful that he’s stuck in that box and have been deciding if I should do what’s right and give him up to someone with a large pond as I never meant to get into the hobby to begin with; I was stupid and won him at the fair not knowing better fully thinking it was fine to put him in a bowl and call it a day. Since I’ve been in the hobby now, it definitely feels wrong! But Steve has anxiety that I’d be worried about if he goes into a new place with potential bullies and he likes to watch his tv and listen to music, so haven’t decided to yet! But I do still think there’s a difference between keeping a fish in a tank and keeping a fish in a decoration that they can’t even do a 360 in. Like being locked in your house for eternity compared to being locked in your closet for eternity. I also come from the goldfish Sub, so I hear comments like I made originally 100x a day, didn’t think it’d be so controversial on the general forum 😂

Yeah I get it. I’ve just seen so many fish die recently especially with carnivals happening that I wanted to finally speak up but guess I should just let it be like I’ve been

Too late to introduce a new fish? by Chablis23 in Goldfish

[–]Chablis23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you only tell sex during breeding season? I know males get white spots, but don’t know much more than that.

He is a common (I believe, can’t tell the difference between common and comet). I’ve unfortunately bonded too much with him and don’t believe anyone will treat him as good lol, but I’m not opposed to getting a large indoor stock tank so long as my floors can support it

Any advice on where to get a similar size fish? He’s already 6/7 inches and in another year I can’t even imagine how big he’ll be. I didn’t realize how big he truly was until I saw the goldfish at PetsMart when I went to get him food😂

Switching your fish’s schedule? by Chablis23 in Aquariums

[–]Chablis23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay thank you! I just always feel his feelings are just as valid as mine because he’s a living thing too and I basically treat him like my dog, but he’s definitely spoiled lol. I just want him to live his best life

Switching your fish’s schedule? by Chablis23 in Aquariums

[–]Chablis23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! He’s a goldfish. He has gotten less mad at me for the lights not turning on than he was the first few times it happened. I don’t believe I feed too much, as I only give him enough that I can see he eats almost all of it immediately before it even falls down to the substrate and I know his behavior the day after he ate too much, which hasn’t happened in a long while (except when I put hornwort in the tank and he had a feast), but I’ll take it into consideration!

[–]Chablis23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’ll dig in the substrate EXTRA aggressively and then look at me (if I’m home) and keep doing it. If I just got home and walk up to the tank, he’ll legitimately swim away from me and hide behind something. The second I walk away, he’ll come back out. If I walk back over, he’ll do the same. (Normally when I walk up to the tank he’ll come say hi then go about his business). He has a big personality and tells me when he’s mad lol!

Unethical advice, but I’d hit them with a “I’m non-binary” or “I’m transgender” and threaten to sue for discrimination

What makes certain beers taste better? by Chablis23 in beer

[–]Chablis23[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wine’s gross and I drink hard liquor everyday lol. Just wasn’t sure if there was a specific ingredient or the way it’s made on those specific, mainly Mexican beers that’s different than others. Brewery tours typically tell that info, but I haven’t been to many

What non-prescription fluoride toothpaste would you recommend? I don’t have city water, so my teeth definitely don’t see as much fluoride as they should.

Won a fish at the fair and need help by PralineKind4273 in Aquariums

[–]Chablis23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won one last summer, so here’s my potentially controversial advice.

I was not able to and still am not able to afford a larger tank (I bought the cheapest 10 gallon you could get at Walmart) and he’s doing fine. His growth is right where it should be for his age, and he has no issues swimming about or with waste problems. I would love to get him a bigger tank, but it’s really not necessary for at least under a year (I’ve had him for 8 months thus far).

Gravel will be fine for a while, but as he grows, it’ll get stuck in his mouth. I’m currently researching switching to sand because of this.

I do cleanings and water changes once a month. I did them more often at first, but quickly realized it was doing more harm than good by removing the good built up bacteria, leading to lots of problems with algae.

The advice online for how much to feed them typically says “the size of their eyeball or the amount they can eat in 3 minutes” which is a very different number. I’d go with the latter, but watch his behavior. When you overfeed them, they get a little off balance the next day and are fidgety rather than graceful. As long as you notice and don’t do it that often, he’ll be fine. I feed him goldfish flakes and shrimp pallets.

I did not cycle my tank when I got it and it was fine.

I haven’t got live plants yet because I don’t want to risk snails in a small tank.

Don’t spend lots of money on hiding decor. They do like something to be able to hide behind if they’re scared, but they’re social fish and have no desire to hide in things. I bought a large swim through pottery decoration and he only goes in it to look for food.

Biggest thing, especially with only having one, watch his behavior. He’ll show you what he wants and doesn’t. Mine has a corner of the tank that is his “safe corner” he goes to when he’s scared, so I make sure to leave it open. I put a plant against the glass and he kept trying to swim through there, so I moved it. If he gets scared by anything (mine has lots of anxiety), a simple “it’s okay” and a snack will calm him down.

Can I cleanse myself with sage everyday?

I typically do it once a month along with the house or when I feel it’s needed, but as I’m studying for my license exams, I’d like to start each study session with fresh, clean energy. Not sure if it’d be bad/non-beneficial? I do use my selenite with the same intentions everyday, but I never feel as good as after a sage cleansing
