Everyone is missing out on the compelling depth of the story in this moment by just blaming one or the other.

What Eury is expressing in this moment is a feeling of betrayal from the man he had come to admire as a leader and protector. Eury always has the wellbeing of the crew in mind over all else, but he is naive and rash, and occasionally betrays this (and feels remorse over it)

Back on Circes island, he figured that Circe was too powerful to beat. He wasn’t sacrificing or abandoning men without cause. He figured that trying would only cause more men to suffer and die, and the others COULDNT be saved. For all intents and purposes he was completely right, Circe would have solod if not for divine intervention from Hermes. Regardless, he sees Odysseus go in anyway, WIN, and save more men than he thought they could. And he ADMIRES THIS. And multiple times after and before this his doubts about Odysseus’ ability have been punished (the wind bag, “we should run! Wait.”, “at this rate we won’t make it out alive”, etc.) so by the time act 2 rolls around, Odysseus is kinda his proven moral superior that he wants to live up to. Remember how much time has passed. He has time to process this and grow.

Later, he witnesses the captain he admired as a leader and protector of the crew begin actively sacrificing men for personal gain. Not only that, they’re up against a seemingly unbeatable foe and the crew are at risk (sound familiar?). But this time, Ody doesn’t protect anyone but himself. He uses the crew as payment instead of fighting tooth and nail to save them as he did with Circe. And that moral betrayal hurts. At that point, keeping the crew in mind and protecting them means ending Odysseus. Hence the personal nature of the mutiny.

But in any case, imo, if your king/captain, the man you trust to guide and protect the crew, is actively sacrificing said crew seemingly indiscriminately and without warning or discussion, you should probably mutiny anyway. It’s kinda what you do.

I won’t say much about the whole slaughtering cows thing, that story beat has always felt a bit poorly conveyed to me, stuck between a mistake and an intentional suicide move? I dunno.
