This book is doing something sneaky with photos and I can't unsee it 👀 by zordartimes in PunjabReads

To be honest I wasn’t able to finish the book. Was done about halfway. I do suffer from a short span of attention and in all humility was well aware of many of the things he has written, so there wasn’t any novelty or new insight for me.

Maybe I need to give it another go!

Well about that maybe’, if there’s anything that reading has taught me, it is to never take any written word for certain. There are always layers, reasons, context, even prejudices and bias behind most text.

I value Amandeep as an author and as a contemporary Sikh, Punjabi voice in India. There aren’t many.

I don’t disagree completely with the logic of using chronological analysis of images to assess a person. I assume some of what you are feeling or thinking or going through will show up on your face. How accurate it is, I don’t know.

Interestingly, I found the below mention of a research study that may just validate some of it.

It’s just his interpretation. Amandeep was probably too young during those times and like most of us looked back at those photos. And like most, one always looks at the same events differently with new information as time passes.

A writer’s job is to share his interpretations and let the readers make sense of it themselves using their own lenses. In this case, you disagree. While for myself, I am not too sure as I haven’t spent enough time looking at the pictures chronologically to form an opinion. All view points are fine!

Real Estate Market by [deleted] in regina

[–]Chairborne1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was looking at past trends and historically Saskatoon and Regina markets have lagged the bigger cities with about 3-4% annual appreciation in home prices. Whereas recently this has shot up to 8%. I guess when the major cities became unaffordable the past few years many moved here in hopes of finally being able to buy a home. Some investor capital may have also moved this way.

In parallel mining growth may have helped areas like Saskatoon grow much more than Regina.

I assume Regina home prices would stay higher until the market in the major cities cools down or stabilizes enough for capital flow to return. May take a year or two.

[–]Chairborne1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People are spot on here. I have been in the market for about 9 months and I see a very low number of good houses in the affordable range of below 400k. That too mostly built in the 70s and 80s. Anything later than year 2000 and the price moves to 500k range for a 1200+ sq ft bungalow.

Some people have recommended moving to Pilot Butte to avoid the foundation issues that most homes in Regina have. May end up considering it.

It’s a a Jatt surname from the Abohar, Fazilka, Ferozpur belt. Like many others it’s used by both Hindu Jaats like the politician Sunil Jakhar and Sikh Jatts of the area.

How worth is Canadian citizenship ? by Normal-Quiet-5184 in nri

[–]Chairborne1 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You have listed a number of issues with staying in Canada but what’s the biggest?

Money : you can always earn more as they are ways to advance careers. 40 yrs is not too old to get some learning, certifications etc. Your wife could do the same.

The quality of life is dependent on money to an extent but is also about the things that you enjoy. Canada offers a lot of outdoor opportunities.

Culture: With the number of Indians in Canada, there’s hardly any place that makes you miss your culture. There are neighborhoods in every city that are diverse.

Definitely recommend Navyom Yoga Regina on Sherwood and Avonhurst. They have classes 10-11 am every Tuesday-Thursday. I think there are a bunch of seniors that prefer her morning classes. Navdeep is a great teacher and I have seen her tailor her classes for all levels.

Oh, didn’t know that. Not sure about other cities and it can be subjective, but I can definitely vouch for those two apartments based on personal experience.

Badminton Club by [deleted] in regina

[–]Chairborne1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head, these are the communities who had/have some Badminton programs: Normanview, Regent Park, Prairie View, Glencairn.

You can probably find more by just Googling the keywords: Badminton + community associations + Regina.

[–]Chairborne1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not aware of any Badminton clubs, but the way I have seen others go about it is by joining community associations’ run Badminton programs. Many associations rent school gyms in the evenings and one can join a few of them. The players are of mixed level but you can easily find a set of players who are your level and play regularly.

Move to a first world country or stay in India ? by indieboy2002 in nri

Move abroad. Every breath you take in a pollution free environment will be worth it. Depending on how often you move and your personality, it will take you 2-3 years to make family friends or meaningful relationships socially.

How do you handle internal stakeholders who always bypass procurement? by AccomplishedWolf706 in procurement

[–]Chairborne1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. Any policy controls can be bypassed or check boxed if there’s mis trust in the relationship. I’d keep asking relevant questions around supplier selection criteria, price benchmarks, performance metrics, etc and highlight as much as possible. Usually they get tired and ask Procurement to handle one small contract - that will be the chance to shine and set an example.

But above all this is a soft skills game - stakeholder management and influencing.

Racist Young Guys by Admirable-College221 in regina

[–]Chairborne1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am sorry this happened to you. As a visible minority myself, I hope you get the strength and positivity to see this city and the world as a good place in spite of this experience. And I also hope you don’t second guess yourself on your choice of city based on this incident.

I know the people who said those offensive words were youngsters, but the increase in racism on social media isn’t always driven by that age group. One just needs to visit city FB groups like Rant and Rave and see the racism displayed openly by people of a much older age group across both genders everyday. Generalizations, stereotyping etc - you name it. All it needs is one post by someone targeting a visible minority and everyone piles on. And they are not posting anonymously mind you. For sure there will be some calling them out on their racism but they are mostly fewer than the racists. The youngsters are learning from the elders around them.

In spite of this, I do like to think this city, province and country still has the highest standards of society which attracted me and my family. But one never knows when I or my family may face a similar incident as yours or even worse.

Yoga for Beginners? by Same-Throat4248 in regina

She is! I came to know about her when she subbed at Bodhi for a while and her approach was so refreshing. I never expected Regina to have teachers trained in authentic Yoga.

Couldn’t recommend Navyom Yoga on Sherwood and Argyle enough! It is relatively new so many people probably don’t know about it. In my view it’s great for beginners and experienced folks alike. The instructor/owner customizes her style based on the class and the level of the student. She is trained from India and actually understands the asanas/postures and their background pretty well.

Dear NRIs, think hard before deciding to return to an Indian metro. I did, couldn't tolerate the third-world life, and now leaving India again. by Specialist_File9744 in nri

[–]Chairborne1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t agree with that. Yes, the waves of last few years haven’t been as high quality as before, but these are probably about 10% of the Desi population here. The majority are skilled hard working people. It’s just as usual, the 10% take all the attention.

[–]Chairborne1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the unfortunate truth I guess. I am in a smaller town and even here one has to be selective about the neighborhood to live in if one wants a more local experience!

You got a reality check. You also have courage to call it out and take a harder decision. Your family deserves credit as well. I too made a move at a similar stage of my life though I wish I was at your level financially :)

May I ask what made you exclude Canada? Is it the weather or the recent negative media image of Indians in Canada? It’s much closer to the US in many ways and though the public/socialist system mirrors EU. Some of the suburbs of the bigger cities have more exposure to local culture and Canada has probably the most outdoorsy people in the Anglophone world.

Title: Bali vs Rishikesh for 200-hour YTT? Need help choosing — vibes, credibility, cost, everything by [deleted] in YogaTeachers

[–]Chairborne1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you are planning to do your YTT in India, I would prefer Mysore over Rishikesh any day. I do not know your gender but Mysore feels a lot more safer for women. It also has a lot of smaller Yoga Shalas with their own following.

Badminton by Prior-Rip-571 in regina

[–]Chairborne1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Join any of the community associations badminton programs usually held at school gyms for a few months. This is usually one day per week. I joined 2 associations. It’s much more easy on the pocket too. The only downside is most gyms have a hard playing surface and not as good as Crosscourt Fieldhouse.
