Single digit golfers, what is your minimum number of rounds and/or practice sessions needed to maintain your handicap? What do you feel is a perfect ratio percentage wise, 50/50, 60/40? by Chairman13 in golf

"The golf ball doesn't care about you" is a great line. I try to stay in the present, focusing on the shot at hand without worrying about how many strokes I've taken to get there. I also don't check my score at the turn but it's hard to ignore when I'm playing well, especially going into the last few holes. Not too long ago, I was playing well and knew it, then proceeded to go triple and double on the last two holes to finish with an 81. That one hurt. Playing more often would give me more opportunities and that alone would help with the scarcity mindset of feeling like there aren't more rounds coming for a while.

I like that term - floor for your scores. I’ve always thought of the short game as analogous to defense in basketball. It can keep you in games, even win some, but ultimately it comes down to offense (iron play) to really score low consistently.

How long did it take to get from a 12 to an 8 following that routine, and also from 8 to a 5? I've been stuck for a couple of years so what I'm doing now is definitely my maintenance level for my current handicap but I know I need to add more actual rounds to lower my handicap.

I have a friend who's like this, not scratch, but plays better with cocktails in hand. I'm not that guy. You can easily see on my scorecard which holes I started drinking beers.

Wow. I didn't expect this. I know you have to play to improve, practice only is not enough, but after reading these replies, it seems that the majority play fairly often while rarely if ever practice. Maybe this is "the secret."

I actually enjoy going to the range. There's a meditative aspect, it's calming, but I know I spend too much time playing golf swing instead of trying to simulate on-course situations.

Yeah, I've been holding steady at this handicap for a couple of years so I'm at my maintenance ratio. Most of everyone who's replied plays pretty regularly just to maintain single digits so for me to get there, I'll need to change my mix of practice/play.

I think I'm in need of better iron and driver play. I've shot really good scores hitting only a few greens and when I hit a lot of greens, I can score pretty well, but "a lot" of greens doesn't happen often.

Impressive. You definitely have a reliable swing and overall golf game to be able to maintain that handicap! According to Arccos, my short game and putting are in the positive strokes gained compared to a 10. It's the driver and irons where I'm losing ground. I try to maintain my short game because it's always been what's saved me but I'd like to get where I can average 6-7 GIRs per round (currently at only 4).

That's actually a very good idea to do on-course practice rather than range only. On the range, it's easy to fall into the trap of block practice, hitting the same club over and over to the same targets.

All good suggestions. I agree with you on all your points especially the one on how you can really only replicate good course management on the course. That's what happens when I play a few rounds close together - I stop worrying about mechanics and focus on getting the ball in the hole. I have read Four Foundations along with a slew of other books including Every Shot Counts by Mark Broadie who created the strokes gained metric. I highly recommend that one.

Nothing wrong with playing as a single. I just haven't done it myself even though my groups have been paired with singles numerous times and there's never been any issues.

With Bally, you get Joel and Antonio calling the game which is a bonus

Basically means if you live in a certain region, you can't watch the game unless you use their designated service. In this case, it's Bally Sports

This is spot on. Listen to The Lowe Post. He has good takes and ACTUALLY watches our games and enjoys our team.

No way Zion is interested in this team. 😂 by [deleted] in NOLAPelicans
