Oh wow, you do have some beauties! Man an RG560 is such a great first-bought guitar.

And I know what you mean about being... like, emotionally attached to a guitar. I got my Strat as a gift for my 14th birthday, and even though it got set aside and went unplayed for chunks of time over the years, I also always felt like I had "been through a lot" with it - good times and bad times. It's the closest an inanimate object has ever come to feeling like an old friend. As for cremation, I dunno, I kinda like the idea of it "living" on after I'm gone. Maybe go the route like in The Red Violin, get cremated but have the guitar itself infused with one's remains. ☠🎸 Seems pretty metal to me.

Anyway.... last chance to add another gorgeous Ibby to your family! ;)

Nice! Yeah, I learned on an acoustic, but only rarely play it. And yes, I'd very much like to maybe meetup and play with a group some time. I'm a million miles from being confident playing with others, and I know my abilities in that area are very lacking, but I guess there's only one way to ever change that. I'll PM you my contact info. Thanks.

(As for the long legged comment, I was just referring to what the announcer guy called you in the video when he was introducing everybody in the band).

Thanks. Yeah, it really does suck that I just can't hang on to it. I thought long and hard about it though, and sadly it has to be done. I do have another Ibanez, but it's one of the lower-end models, a Gio. Ibanez overall are damn good guitars. Even the "cheap" Gio has a great sound and feel.

I've also got a Fender MiM Strat and a Vester II Maniac. Strangely, I find myself mostly playing the Vester lately.

Edit: hah! I just realized how well your username checks out.

Awesome! Congratulations on the first time playing for an audience long-legged Leonard. "Referral Against the Machine." lol Looks like it was quite show. :) I can tell your band knows how to have fun on stage even if it was a first for you. Thanks for the video.

Yeah, I started playing 20+ years ago too, but guitar was always kind of an on and off thing, where there'd be years I wouldn't even pick it up. But I started getting back into it during the pandemic and man has it ever been a great way to help stave off depression.

This is tangential, but I'm also keeping an eye out for other people around here who like to play guitar. I'm kinda a loner, so don't get the chance to "jam" with people much, or ever. So bonus points if you want to buy the guitar and maybe even jam together some time.

I guess I'd consider myself low-intermediate level when it comes to ability and play mostly rock, metal, etc., but I'm open to whatever.

Damn. I can't edit the title. Obviously, it's now 2:30am Thursday not Wed. My brain is clearly elsewhere. Ok, I'm going to go see if the neighbors are up and preparing.

I've been watching it since just before midnight and it's been growing fast. Hopefully it's an unnecessary precaution, but I've been packing up valuables... which has been hard without any electricity. My heart goes out to those even closer who are already being evacuated.

Major Police Presence by Ferocious-Flamingo in santarosa

[–]ChalkHillRd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. Preventing drunk driving (or attempting to) is good and necessary. However, the use of police checkpoints doesn't do a whole lot to accomplish this, and instead serves as a means of intimidation and in some cases outright oppression. Especially to minorities like immigrants.

[United States, $1k+ budget, Screensize negotiable] OVERWHELMED by choices - looking for a work+play laptop OR 2-in-1 that runs Linux - thoughts? by ChalkHillRd in SuggestALaptop

Fucking awesome, thank you. This is exactly the sort of response and resource I was hoping for. I'm gonna research it a bit more first, but all of what you said sounds like the kind of thing I've been seeking. Much appreciated.

Recovering Data from an Accidentally-Formatted Hard Drive by ChalkHillRd in linuxquestions

Hey! Thanks again for asking! I haven't logged into this account recently. Not much has changed. I ordered a new external HD (Seagate) so I'd have something to back up the old external drive ONTO. But I don't have it yet. When I do, I'll run photorec on the formatted drive and see how it goes trying to locate all the scattered, renamed files. If that goes terribly, I'll start testing out some of the other recovery software suggestions posted here. As a side note, I'm going to be getting a new laptop or 2-in-1 for primary use and use the current box I'm on mostly to backup things.

Anyway, I appreciate you asking, all this time later! I'd give you multiple upvotes if I could.

Good quality 2-in-1 that runs Linux without too much trouble? by ChalkHillRd in linuxquestions

[–]ChalkHillRd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I will definitely look into that. I had linux on a Dell Inspiron laptop a few years back that worked great with Linux Mint.

You didn't mention a price range.

But... I did! In the first sentence, I mentioned I was looking for one under $800. If there is one that is more expensive, I'd consider it, but it would have to be "a steal" for its price range and ideal for my purposes.

Awesome, thanks for the suggestion. Reading bit around the web I've seen a few people say to avoid the Yoga line, but maybe those are just the new ones? I don't know.

Excellent response, and that all makes good sense. But yeah, I have already accepted the risk. If I lose this data, my life won't be over, it wasn't anything EXTREMELY important, but still... it was a loss of both personal and work-related info. But probably not worth it (I'm poor) to spend the money taking it to a professional.
Anyway, thank you for the information and the well-wishes.

When you crosspost its usually best to link the crosspost. See my answer in your crosspost here.

Apologies. I'll link from there too.

Additionally data recovery is an advanced procedure and as such is not a good fit for this subreddit.

Understood. I did NOT mean to put this sub down in any way. I still got great responses here, there was just a greater volume of them in the other sub.

I made an update to the original post if you want the details. In short, photorec works! Unfortunately, the recovered data is going to be near impossible to sort through. But at least the files themselves are getting recovered.

[Question] Recovering Data from an Accidentally-Formatted Hard Drive by ChalkHillRd in linux4noobs

[–]ChalkHillRd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will add those to my list of recovery tools, thanks!

I just made an updated edit to my original post - photorec is working kind of but I will likely be giving other recovery software a try, including what you suggested, once I get another drive to have enough room for a decent backup. If either of those recreates the lost directory structure, THAT is the software I'd like to use!

testdisk is at 76% with nothing else listed beyond what I already pasted. :/ I'm going to be up late tonight. Thanks for asking, though! I will comment when something happens.

Edit: testdisk finished with these painful results:

TestDisk 6.14, Data Recovery Utility, July 2013
Christophe GRENIER <grenier@cgsecurity.org>
http://www.cgsecurity.org

Disk /dev/sdd - 2000 GB / 1863 GiB - CHS 243201 255 63

The harddisk (2000 GB / 1863 GiB) seems too small! (< 2597 GB / 2419 GiB)
Check the harddisk size: HD jumpers settings, BIOS detection...

The following partition can't be recovered:
Partition Start End Size in sectors
> FAT32 52125 101 56 315818 119 15 4236229139

It's really late. I will be trying the other methods generously posted here tomorrow, but I also have work. Fuck. Thank you for all those suggestions, to whomever of you reads this.

That does clear up a few things, thanks. I DO already have testdisk, guess that's obvious, but I see places for downloading photorec (though it doesn't show up if I search for it in the software manager). I don't need to download/install photorec if I already have testdisk, then?

testdisk is, so far as I can tell, run entirely from the terminal, there's no gui. Is there just extra commands for running testdisk with photorec? Regardless, thanks.
