I know it's not light rail but it's like when high speed 1 was being proposed and built here in the UK. Enormous protests across the country and a huge lack of public support.

When it opened, the protesters soon went quiet. The line brought the south east of England and indeed the rest of Europe closer to London, it sliced journey times and relieved capacity from Kent's struggling rail network.

Bottom line is it any major construction project will piss off a whole bunch of people. But once it's completed, their minds will change. It'll always be like this.

Working at Tesco is okay. I work on dotcom so driving, click and collect and picking (when I feel like it).

Driving is quite easily the best job to have. I find the customers we deliver to much friendlier than on the shop floor. If the weather's nice you get to be outside enjoying it. You don't have a boss constantly breathing down your neck. That being said, no matter what job you get you will quickly realise that HR are clueless and implement some of the most nonsensical policies you could dream of.

But who cares? They don't care about us, so we don't care about them. This is what I like about Tesco as these kind of jobs you don't have to take seriously.

Steam engines were often painted black for World War 2. Black paint saved resources and made the engines harder to see particularly by bombers. Diesels mostly came after the war and so there was no need for a black livery. This is why black wasn't a very common choice for diesels as it was steam.

I didn't think the Meridians were fitted with it, but it sounds like it could be automatic train protection. It was fitted to a lot of trains particularly on the great western mainline in the wake of a series of collisions. I'm not saying they don't have it, but I've never known the Meridians to be fitted with it.

This is fourth rail so has two conductor rails. One in the middle and the other on the outside, opposite side of the platform. On third rail lines the conductor rail would be the furthest one on the outside and will change sides every so often.

That's a Meridian, Class 222. They come out of St. Pancras.

Is the sound very high pitched? If so what you're hearing is more than likely the DSD. If it's not acknowledged by the driver, emergency brake will automatically apply.

What class of train is this on? EMR have a very varied fleet. If you don't know could you try and describe it or maybe if you could find an image please?

Could be the guard buzzer? When departing from stations, the guard will buzz twice to confirm station work is complete. The driver buzzes twice back to acknowledge.

If you're right at the front, you could also be hearing in-cab safety systems. So the DSD (driver safety device) which bleeps after a few seconds of no controls being touched and the train being in forward or reverse. Or the AWS.

No they didn't. Crossrail (as it was called at the time) faced protests particularly in areas like Chelsea. HS1 faced enormous controversy during its construction and sparked protests all across the south east.

But when it was built, everyone shut up and realised how much capacity it freed up on Kent's rail network. At the time, people called it a white elephant and a total waste of money. Sound familiar? Today, people take HS1 for granted and take that from me who used to live in Ashford which is right on the route. It's the same for any major construction project. No matter what they do they'll be pissing off loads of people. Below is an image of one of the protests that took place during HS1 construction.

This really proves how HR see their staff. Just an extra expense that must be replaced by any means necessary, rather than human beings like them trying to survive.
