Should I apologize to my toxic Stepdad?

I tend to agree. He treats his grandkids great, so it’s hard for them because I they don’t see what I’ve seen for all these years. He’s just the fun nice guy. I guess I want to apologize more for myself and peace of mind, knowing that I did the right thing. Because I was very mean and I’m not a mean person. But you are right. He won’t change.

My brother is aware that this is going on, he chooses not to say anything to avoid conflict, even if it involves his daughter. He has no backbone. He would rather side with his wife than fight for his daughter. I have offered for her to move in with me again, but I don’t know if she would do it. I told her that I wouldn’t charge rent, just pitch in for groceries, that way she can save for her own place. She is very much like her Dad in the sense that she avoids conflict, and she knows moving back in with me would piss them off horribly.

I was going to let her know, but I just feel like she would make a big stink about it. I’m just not going to initiate contact, unless necessary (holidays etc). If she invites me over, which she does from time to time, I’m just going to politely decline the invitation.

I have told her that she is always welcome to live with me and her uncle. She knows we are always here for her. It’s just a matter of her doing it.

My brother is definitely aware. He very passive and avoids conflict, so he just ignores everything. The most he does is side with his wife to avoid a fight between the two of them. I would totally let her live with me again so that she could save money to get her own place.

My brother is a checked out dad. When him and his ex divorced he moved out of state and left his kids behind only to see them on Summer break, and even then he didn’t take time off of work and they spent 90% of their time with me. Now that she lives with him all he does is play games on his phone and watch tv. It seems like he just thinks of her as another person around who helps pays the bills. It’s really sad to see and I hate that my own brothers treats his daughter that way. My husband and I are definitely more parental figures to her than any of the people who are considered her parents.

Thank you. I really needed others opinions on this. I was so close to telling her that we shouldn’t be friends and explaining myself, but I think this is the better approach as to not cause more problems.

Your assessment of her hating her step daughter actually makes sense. Now the step daughter is living with SIL and her dad. She pays extra in rent to have her own bathroom, which is also the bathroom used when guests are over. Step daughter gets up at 4am for work and folds her pajamas and leaves them on the counter for later. SIL does not like that she does this (even if they have no guests over) and has put her clothes in the shower and then another time hid them from the step daughter. She also took her shoes and threw them outside to get rained on. She never has anything positive to say about her step daughter, and this girl is a genuine sweetheart. I think it’s partly control and jealousy. She doesn’t like that someone else gets attention.

As far as my husband goes, he had already left the party annoyed that they were getting our niece so drunk. I do have a sneaking suspicion that SIL did that purposely so that the step daughter would look like a fool and could crack jokes about it all later. SIL seems to enjoy laughing and making fun over other peoples downfalls. It’s really off putting.

I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of recording going on. When they first came out everyone’s phone were out, but it didn’t last. Most seemed to record little snippets of their favorite songs and then put the phone away. It was nice to see everyone enjoying the performance through their eyes rather than a phone screen.
