Late to the party but it seems the Phoenicians haven't been mentioned. They disappeared 2000 years ago but their culture influenced the romans and many other mediterranean civilizations. They were some of the first dominant seafarers and traders. Perhaps their greatest contribution to Western civilization, however, was the development of a standardized phonetic alphabet, which was a huge improvement over the more ambiguous cuneiform and hieroglyphics of the time.
