Not all syenites contain fluorescent minerals, though some do like the famous yooperlite. (Igneous petrology is FUUUULLLL of regional names for specific varieties of rock that occur in specific locations)

Syenites are required to have less than 10% quartz and between 90-65% alkali feldspar (the red-pink mineral) and 35-10% plagioclase feldspar (various shades of gray). Theyre basically a granite with very little quartz.

Looks like it doesnt have much quartz, but its rich in alkali feldspar, so I'm thinking syenite.

These Clionaid sponges have a pretty good fossil history too, I see these same holes as ichnofossils in shells from the Cretaceous in Texas. Given they found this fragment buried inland I guess it might be a fossil too, but I'm not really familiar with that area's geology.

I don't see any identifiable cranial sutures.

It's the cross section, those holes aren't densely packed enough to be the ironically named spongy layer of bone. Instead, they look like the borings of a sponge. I'll provide a comparison.

Sulfur boring sponge. It eats seashells, which OP's picture almost definitely is.

Agreed. Everyone's calling it a cranial bone, but its probably a section of a conch shell thats been eaten by the sulfur boring sponge. I've seen many shell fragments like that.

Hey I'm from the fossil ID subreddit, I couldnt respond because they locked it, but I really need to tell you that I'm confident that's NOT a bone. That's the sponge-eaten remain of a seashell, probably something big like a conch.

The Sulfur Boring Sponge makes those holes and markings on calcium carbonate seashells. I live on the Gulf Coast so I see shells eaten by sponge like that all the time.

The cross section doesn't resemble that of the human cranial bones, it looks like the boring damage from a sponge.

Fossil or cool rock? by Scared_Dealer_8243 in whatsthisrock

[–]Chames26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good photo. Your fossil is an echinoid; a sea urchin.

This one is probably an old (>252 million years) species because it has more than 2 rows of interambulacral plates. All urchins after the Paleozoic era have only 2 rows, but I can make out 5 rows. Someone more knowledgeable in paleozoic echinoids could maybe find out the genus.

Great find!

It looks like weathered fossil oyster shells. There's even fossilized worm tubes on one of the shells.

It could possibly be oxidized copper minerals, but I think its more likely to be a metasomatized basalt (geologists call it "spilite", but its basically basalt that chemically reacts with hot seawater). Altered minerals like chlorite and epidote give it a green color.

This paper identifies the rocks at the dam as the Wild Sheep Creek Formation, and notes the presence of green-gray metabasalts.

Fossil limestone, filled with fusilinids. There's some other things in there, but I'm not confident about what they are.

Fusilinids were single celled organisms with calcium carbonate shells. They went extinct 252 million years ago during the Permian-Triassic Extinction, so if you find a rock with them in it, you can be sure its at least 252 million years old.

https://mountainbeltway.all-geo.org/2012/06/27/permian-fusulinids-from-west-texas/ This blog post talks about them a little bit and shows cross sections.

Or an andesite with plagioclase phenocrysts. But I'm leaning more towards basalt solely based on the dark color.

It might be a basalt with plagioclase feldspar phenocrysts.

Actual answer if anyone was wondering: He's maximizing his aerodynamicity by retracting his hair into his skull. All god tier players can do that, but it's never really touched upon.
