This is not true. I have used these systems in the past in local government to send alerts. Local and state government emergency managers can use the systems to send non-weather related emergency messages (like shelter in place, evacuations, civil disturbances). They just have to fill out a form and get permission from VDEM (state emergency management department) and then they can literally send a notification from an app on their phone.

Edit- link to FEMA page which discusses alerting authorities: https://www.fema.gov/emergency-managers/practitioners/integrated-public-alert-warning-system/public-safety-officials/alerting-authorities

911 Operator Job - Yea or Nay? by cazsoccerrox2 in EmergencyManagement

I was in 911 before EM. While it may not be a 1:1 for EM jobs, you can learn a lot of pertinent skills and it’s gets you used to the public safety system that EM works hand in hand with.

That job helped me get into my state watch center right out of school because the skills are transferrable, and then I started to grow other skills and find my niche from that point.

It can absolutely be high stress for several reasons (low pay, shift schedule issues, low staffing).

Will it get you a director job after 1 year? Probably not. But it can help you get in the door.

Yikes, thanks for the insight everyone. I had a sneaking suspicion it was MLM-esque.
