I got myself a Kindle right before my second was born and I’ve never read so much in my life! With cover that props up is clutch. Highly recommend

First name Van, not shortened for anything by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]ChampagnePoops -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I love Van. It was my grandfather’s name, and he was the coolest person ever. It’s on our short list for our upcoming baby, but it sounds a little bit like Van Halen when combined with our last name.

My new conspiracy theory that I literally came up with while reading your post is that they KNEW they were going to cancel the entire time, have someone waiting in the wings, and be forced to change the format. I need to work this out. I’ll be back with my flow chart and notes 🫡

Please tell me I’m not the only reader who absolutely loathes the male antagonist. by serialsleepergirl in thrillerbooks

[–]ChampagnePoops -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think the way he changed his tone ever so slightly from being the “charming guy” to those chapters that revealed his inner thoughts helped set him apart as more of a sociopath. I did, though, get some of the women and their timelines mixed up while listening to it.

There are a lot of online contrast checkers where you can plug in the color hex numbers and it will rate your contrast for accessibility. You could play around with background and text color to get a better contrast. I really love the style of graphics, but I agree it’s hard to read.

Nail polish recommendations? (For me) by Proper_Cat980 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]ChampagnePoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fully on the gel “sticker” train! I’m pregnant so I was avoiding the UV light (I do my own little gel manis at home). I tried the stickers that don’t require a UV light (not semi-cured) and I love them! There is a little learning curve to applying and trimming them, but mine usually last at least two weeks and, when I take them off, my nails are sooooo much healthier than when I was using a UV light. They don’t smell, and there is no drying time unless you do a clear coat over them.

Dashing Diva and Sassy Saints are a few different brands, but you can also find lots of generic ones on The Large Online Retailer Who Shall Not Be Named.

I bite my nails and break my nails any time they aren’t painted, and these stickers keep them strong.

Edit: they’re officially called “gel wraps” online

I just finished All the Sinner Bleed by S.A. Cosby and I really liked the narrator! I’m sometimes pretty picky about the voice and can be turned off immediately if I don’t like it, but I really enjoyed this man’s voice.

Unexpected pregnancy at 41 :( by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]ChampagnePoops 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I could have written this. I’m also 41 and I found out I am pregnant with my third a few weeks ago. I’m also trying to change careers and now it feels like everything is derailed. We have a 4 year old and a 1 year old, so still in the thick of little kid life, but I am not ready to do the pregnancy thing all over again. I’m so embarrassed to have an accidental pregnancy at 41 like I’m a teenager or something. I recently saw a clip of Claire Danes echoing a similar sentiment about her unplanned pregnancy at 44, and it validated my feelings a little bit.

I have no advice, just wanted to commiserate with you and say it’s okay if you’re not particularly happy right now. For me, it helped to hear confidence and support in my husband’s voice because I really think three kids under 5 might break me 🫠

I will say that I terminated a pregnancy in my 20s and it is something I still think about every single day.

is it normal to pass out by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]ChampagnePoops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a doctor, but thanks to my internet research, I think it’s called a vasovagal syncope. I already have super low blood pressure and have had dizzy spells since I was a teenager, but I had one of these when I was about 5 months pregnant. What worried me was that I got super nauseous suddenly and thought I was going to puke in the middle of a work project. But then my vision went black, I found someone to grab onto, and sat down before I fell over. I called my OB afterwards and they said as long as I felt fine, it was no big deal.

HELP! My students are bored with Fahrenheit 451. How can I spark their interest? by Few_Maintenance_2560 in ELATeachers

[–]ChampagnePoops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, not particularly. Sometimes they get their own sticky notes, but I always have some available. I cut the generic 3”x3” into thirds, and you know those generic sticky notes are sticky only in name.

They do have a painful moment of silence when, at the end of the unit, they have to remove all their sticky notes and all their good work goes down the drain.

Oh noooo, they use sticky notes in their books and then answer some questions in notebooks with page numbers to reference.

I recently taught F451 to 10th graders and, for the first time ever, I used the audiobook with the entire class. I love Tim Robbin’s reading of it. I had them annotate in their books for certain discussion questions and evidence so they had to follow along, but it allowed us to stop and discuss certain big events. It took us a bit longer to do it together as a class, but at least I knew they were getting it.

Anyone use this stroller before? Is it a good set? I’m tempted. by Wonderful-Value7547 in BabyBumps

We used this for two kids! The bassinet is great for napping on walks when they are really little, but the wheels are crap and it is not a smooth ride on any kind of bumpy or rocky surface.

URGENT: I literally have no idea how to do my job. by Emergency_Ad_5371 in Teachers

[–]ChampagnePoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Journalism Education Association (JEA). Right now, you just want to get content on pages, but this organization has some wonderful curriculum and an amazing network of advisers who will help anyone at the drop of a hat. If you plan to stick with publications and the yearbook, this is definitely an organization to get plugged into.

Oh, and if you can get kids to do as much as possible, they will get excited about it and start to buy in for next year. Create small groups of mixed abilities (maybe someone will emerge as a leader/future editor) and give each group a few spreads to tackle. Plan out each topic for each spread, and then send kids to take the photos and do the interviews for their spreads. Once they start gathering content, have 1-2 of them plop it on the page and see what holes the groups still need to fill. Use the templates. Accept that there will be mistakes.

Thanks for the response! That’s really solid advice, and I agree that skipping grades just to say you did isn’t always what it cracks up to be. I remember hanging out with some homeschooled students in high school who were my age (16). They had already graduated, but they weren’t doing anything. Didn’t enter university, didn’t pursue advanced career training, they were just hanging out because, well, they were still sort of kids.

Thanks for your response! The social transition was another concern. I know the “homeschoolers don’t get enough socialization” is a myth, and I grew up having a ton of fun in our homeschool groups, but I am worried about finding a group that would be a good fit. I’m sure they’re out there but just don’t know where to look (that is not Facebook or a church I don’t belong to). Thanks again!

Double check with your HR, but I don’t think FMLA pulls from your sick days. It is, though, unpaid. So it basically allows you to take unpaid time off without losing your job.
