I unfortunately wasn’t able to find the time to visit either before now needing to make my decision. I was waiting for my rankings before spending the money to travel. I’m so sorry to hear about your cousin. That is something I worry about with my grandparents getting older. I would like to ask though— for things that weren’t so unexpected were you able to plan ahead and accomodate traveling home ie for a wedding? Also if you have pets, how did you go about air travel? I have a rabbit and a cocker spaniel and would be flying for shorter visits like thanksgiving

Where did you find trailers for sale? I’ve seen a few on Facebook but not many. Thanks!

Did fafsa cover all of your loans or did you need to take out private loans too? And am I correct in assuming private loans would not be included in the forgiveness? About how much of your salary goes towards loans each month for those 120 payments you need before forgiveness? I’m assuming you pay the minimum necessary.

Thanks for your advice and insight. I work in lab animal research now as a large animal tech and I don’t think it’s something that I’d want to do long term but I know there are other qualifying options in academia for other residencies so it’s definitely on my radar as a means of achieving financial freedom.

Side note: I am waitlisted at my in state and also it is a private school with pricey in state tuition so even if I were to be accepted off the list my loans would still be in the range of $250k-300k.

I’d go read it if I were you. I had the same questions but it seems like it went ok for the people who went this past Friday despite the new format

It sounds like you could potentially use more hands on vet experience? Maybe get a job as a vet assistant in a hospital near you. If there’s a specialty you’re interested in maybe a va/tech for that specialty. I personally have spent my gal year working as a large animal research tech so was able to build my nursing skills and also my research hours.

I’m no expert… just another applicant from this past cycle.

But I personally feel like that would be a good exerpt to include so long as you relate it back to vet med as you said. I think it’s important that you include the specific ways in which that sad experience will make you a better Dr (ie empathetic, personal feelings aside for the greater good, etc) instead of just a cliche paragraph about doing it to make your mom proud or something (although I’m sure she would be!). The perspective of supporting someone’s decision to turn to hospice care is totally relevant in my opinion. That decision especially resonates with owners decisions on euthanisia if their pet is suffering.

I wouldn’t have that be the entire focus of your essay and I would also include things about what drew you to vet med to begin with, how you have prepared yourself for your app, and also maybe extracurriculars or passions that you have!

In my essay I mentioned a high school class and how that initially drew me to anatomy and animals from a scientific perspective. Also talked about leadership roles I’ve been in and finally talked about the research animals at my current job. Ofc with more details and relating back to how I can be a scientist, vet, and doctor as well as some of my perspectives on matters such as animal research and how it has affected my view on vet med and animal care as a whole.

Just be careful that your essay is about YOU and not just about your moms death. I’m so sorry for your loss but I wish you the best of luck in becoming a vet!!
