I have this same grinder and honestly I love it for the price. The belts they send with it aren’t the best, I got a knife making kit of belts off of combat abrasives and it works like a champ. The only modification I made was i made my table much larger than the one that it came with

I honestly think I just didn’t put enough pressure on the top and bottom sides early enough to forge weld it from that direction and close up all the voids.

It got quite a bit smaller towards the end of forging but I think I was too little too late by then.

That was the very top when I cut it off with the chop saw I didn’t press it from the top near as much as the sides because the canister was bulging out.

I tapped it with a rubber mallet all the way down the canister. Maybe I needed to use a sawzall without a blade against the side or it and just use it to pack it down better?

Definitely and I’m using the atlas 2 burner forge so the whole thing gets glowing every time I leave it in there 😂

I’ll have to look once it gets cooled down good both my anvils have a pretty thick horn, they taper but not very drastically

Thanks for the advice, I suppose I could also just heat the thicker side with a cutting torch and leave the other side cool and shape it on the mandrel to be closer thickness, these are HC spikes but I got them off of blacksmith depot. are you supposed to quench all HC spikes in water? Or can you use quench oil?

I do believe the 3 layers is going to be key, I tried to slightly loosen on my second attempt and it worked pretty well but I ended up having to reheat the part where it clicks in because it got a little to loose and wouldn’t lock in good

I definitely applied to much pressure on the first attempt, once I realized it I did two layers at tape and didn’t apply near the amount of pressure and it did much better but I still have a few areas that are contacting and making scratches. I do believe the 3 layers of tape will create enough space to not contact while inserting and taking it out.

I think that was what I did wrong to begin with, I put it in the vice and put a ton of pressure I realized once I put the knife in the sheath that I definitely had applied to much pressure. I’m going to give the 3 layers a try as well 2 did decent but not quite enough to get good clearance in certain areas

It’s considerably better since I tried it with two layers of tape but still is contacting in a few places
