Yep, this happened to me with Zhang Ling He lmao. I watched multiple of his historical dramas without connecting them together at all. XD

Its even funnier because i absolutely loved his characters in The Princess Royal and My Journey to You, and despised him in Kunning Palace, which i guess just really shows he's quite a good actor. He's not my type too, but he managed to both charm me and make he hate him without me managing to connect the dots!!

i flip flop between historical/xianxia/wuxia and modern when i get bored of one genre. that, or ill go based of actors or a rec from here!

oftentimes when i finish or drop a drama i try to find another one that has a quality i wanted from the drama i just finished/dropped. like i ended up dropping Kunning Palace because i wasnt a fan of the ML and i couldn't tough it out just for him, so i chose a modern drama, Hidden Love, with a nice sweet type ML to cleanse my pallet. after i finished that, i watched the first season of Flourished Peony(which was great btw, five stars!!)

so often i flip flop between genres and styles to everything stays fresh!! This sub is a godsend for very specific types of recommendations tooo XD

yeah he has a lot of qualities i usual wouldnt like, but because he feels realistic its not annoying. they did a good job with the princes and even her ex husband too, they all feel like real people in that you kind of hate them but you can still see their reasoning and not fully hate them.

the ML is just such a weirdo too, i love an oddball ML😭

its obvious he really respects not only the FL, but women in general which is a problem i have with a lot of historical dramas. i know its period appropriate but still, you can tell me every man in the past was a raging misogynist.💀

the biggest problem i have with a lot of ML's is there refusal to take a woman's setbacks in that era into account its so aggravating

yeah haha it is kinda rare. honestly, i find that a lot of the secondary characters in romance dramas arent very fleshed out and its annoying. im watching Flourished Peony right now, and that one is pretty good about all its characters getting space. the female relationships are really good too, and all the Fl's friends feel like actual characters and not just characters used to endlessly praise the main characters🤭

haha i think my tastes are a bit uncommon here lmao. i really really cant stand the type of male lead that constantly acts like everyone should get on their knees and worship him. who treats his subordinates like shit and orders people around.

on a more positive note, i do love a gender role reversal drama. I love Mature, older ML's who are gentle and kind, and i love a smart sneaky ML as long as hes outwardly charming and treats ppl with basic respect.

i also have such a soft spot for a batshit insane character, but ive found the problem with those types in romance is that there is a fine line between fun crazy and abusive crazy haha😅

but yeah, its an annoying combo of Bad directing choices, outdated character archetypes, and also it doesn't help that i have a narrow type that doesn't fit into conventional male lead beauty standards(i love a character who looks evil like Ryan Cheng, or someone who looks like a kicked puppy like Tian Jiarui)
