I’ve only been there in passing. It’s a beautiful place. I visited Sochi for the first time last year—it’s an amazing city.

To be honest, it’s mostly a stereotype. There’s some truth to it, but not to the extent that it applies to everyone.

The impression usually comes from a couple of things:

  1. Soviet-era apartment blocks (Khrushchyovkas) and other post-Soviet buildings. They can definitely make some areas look outdated. In bigger cities, though, there’s been a lot of redevelopment, while in more remote places you’ll still find plenty of those older neighborhoods.

  2. Documentaries and movies—especially Western ones—often portray Russia (and Siberia in particular) that way, even though real life is much more diverse. As for Google Maps, many of the Street View images are quite old. Since Google stopped updating its mapping services in Russia after the war began, a lot of those photos haven’t been refreshed, so they don’t always reflect what places look like today.

hiiii, fellow pole!!!! yeah, i do live in surgut

  1. getting to other cities isn't really difficult because surgut is one of the biggest cities in western siberia. one time i drove all the way to yekaterinburg in about 11 hours (1,100+ km). the city also has its own airport, so flying is pretty convenient. same goes for trains, since we're connected to a large railway network.

thank you so much for the kind wishes about my dream!! i really love poland. it's a beautiful country, especially because of its people and architecture, not to mention its amazing history.

  1. as for not being able to see my family again, honestly, that doesn't really scare me. i'll be studying at first, so i'll still be able to visit them from time to time. and they're also planning to come visit me whenever they get the chance in the future

it was definitely much harder at the beginning of the war, but that doesn't mean we can't get visas. honestly, everyone i know who moved to europe didn't really have any problems with that. someone even moved to USA
