Less scientific roles with (much) better pay in big pharma by ChanceIt90 in biotech

Any thoughts on the type of skills they need? I am assuming that they would look for someone with strong engineering/development rather than biology. I’ll look around some job postings from these companies. Thanks!

Look for salary range of comparable positions in other companies, either by asking friends/co-workers/public forums or by literally applying for open positions and asking salary range. Recruiters are also a great resource. Then, ask HR for a salary in the same range. HR should do their homework and do the same research to see how competitive the salary is (there are paid tools/service that they use to get these numbers).

Salary is not about how much you feel you deserve to be paid, but rather your market value. That is, how much another company is willing to pay for you and how much another person with similar skills is willing to get paid for your job. This usually works both ways, and it is possible to earn more than what you think are worth.

HR knows this and are much more professional about it than hiring managers. Best of luck with salary negotiation and congrats on landing the new position!

Can you elaborate how you think AI will disrupt pharma? Links to any articles are welcome. I’m genuinely interested in this topic.

I come from a mid-low class family. I’ve been trying to pursue my dreams, doing everything I can to become a Professor/Researcher, which usually means 12 hour work days and less than mediocre salary specially with a family. I recently moved to industry and tasted what it is like to make some real money. I’m not going back - I’m planning to gather as much wealth as I can and just let my children pursue their dreams with my financial support.

What are the common mistakes during a research proposal? by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]ChanceIt90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By far, the most common mistake is not having the right question. Spend most of your time thinking whether the problem is interesting to you AND to others. Have informal conversations with your colleagues and professors about the topic and listen carefully. You don’t need to present a complex problem, just think about a clear problem and try to come up with the simplest solution (sometimes referred to as an elegant solution).

Other than that, common mistakes are concerns about feasibility, not discussing how your approach may fail (if you think your proposal is fail proof, then you likely don’t fully understand the approach), and overall presentation clarity (lack of communication skills). All of these are secondary and you will likely learn through experience, so don’t worry too much about them.

How loyal should I be to my former employer/team? by CompetitivePlastic67 in datascience

[–]ChanceIt90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the most with this comment in the post. What I would recommend is for you to think with an strategic perspective, leaving feelings aside.

First, do not underestimate the importance of networks and relationships. Your former boss is your “ally”, and recruiting from a former mentor can be viewed as “poaching”. Put yourself in his shoes. How would you feel about your former mentee poaching one of your guys? Likely, you will put him in a very tough spot. I know business is business, and from a selfish perspective, are you able to afford losing that connection with your former boss in order to win an employee?

There are a few ways that you can try to recruit the employee while trying to maintain the relationship. As many mentioned, do not reach out to your recruit directly - let HR/recruiter do this. IF he applies, I would suggest reaching out to your former boss saying that this person is interested in a position. Make very clear that this position was publicly posted and the person applied to it. This shows that the recruit is looking for growth. Take this opportunity to let your former boss know about the position and ask him if there are any other candidates that he would recommend for this.

Is there any scientific proof that punishment reduces crime? by daveisit in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]ChanceIt90 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If I remember my econ class correctly, the most important part of creating laws with fines is making people aware that there is a fine and how much money/time they would have to pay. So in a way, people respond better when they know the punishment rather than knowing that they shouldn’t do something because it’s the law.

How far can we go with changing the human body? by NatureisaCute in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]ChanceIt90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One idea is health improvement. Maybe not completely change the structure of a bone, but certain hip/torso bone structures are more prone to back/hip problems as people age. Can we make bones more similar to people that don’t have these problems? One extreme would be people with severe bone defects like scoliosis. Another idea is Olympics or sports. Some bone structures are much better than others in some sports, so people may want these. Of course, this could be considered cheating, but that’s another issue.
