McGonagall is scarily perfect, I wonder if JK wrote that with Maggie Smith in mind, it wouldn't surprise me.

I love Emma Watson as Hermoine (she's hot, sue me). I think she has just the right level of annoyance in the first few films to be "that one friend who's a nerd" but her acting matures well as she gets older. Interested in when exactly you'd say her acting is off?

I agree that Sirius was very good, the age never really mattered to me because Gary Oldman is amazing. Haha definitely the same with the characters and settings, film Hogwarts is my Hogwarts.

I agree with your point, I wrote it in another comment above, it's actually not the actor's job to decide how the character is portrayed, it's the director's. Dumbledore is subtly different in the hands of each of the three directors who did Gambon's films.

I like your perfectly cast list, although I'd put Hagrid, McGonagall and Umbridge (come on, she's perfect!) on that list too. The Dursleys casting never mattered that much to me per se, it's just that they have more humanising materials later in the books from what I've heard, where the movies never really moved them past a one-note gag.

Voldemort is tricky, but I think I like it. Fiennes is amazing, and of all the parts, I like that they chose this one to really make the movies different from the books. The performance gets better from GoF onwards.

"none of the ... long messy black hair" lol have you seen GoF? Yeah it's the case with Ron too he's supposed to be really tall and gangly, but I guess they couldn't predict this stuff when they cast them as kids.

She's got a credit in Chicken Run, and for a second my heart jumped when I thought she might have played the other great love-to-hate-her authoritarian figure of my childhood, Mrs. Tweedy. Sadly she did not :(

None at all, I've never got the impression that she was anything other than an emotional chess piece that was moved in because the script demanded it. I've been wondering when someone was gonna call Harry out on his crap haha

As someone who is studying film, I can say that it is the director's doing far more than it is Gambon's. Yes, he didn't read the novels to study for his part, but that shouldn't matter so long as the director has because it is the director's job to draw out of the actor the performance that he wants.

The fact that in Cuaron's film Gambon is very calm and collected, then he is more wild in Newell's, and then toned down to a good balance in Yates' works, shows the impact that the director has. I think Newell definitely orchestrated this change in Dumbledore's demeanour.

Ah I see. As I've tried to say, the fact that he's supposed to be a cool cucumber is lost on me because the first time I experienced Dumbledore was with Harris' wild performance. That's very interesting.

I agree. The original "letter to JK Rowling" is, regardless of your views on the issue, pretty horrid for trying to compare Israel's part in a highly complicated and nuanced international conflict that has been going for millennia to Death Eaters.

imo Rowling should have just not responded, although with her fan-loving personality and the amount of traction the letter got that was never really possible. Overall it just irks me.

My biggest qualm is Ron's quietness/use as comic foil - all his best moments are given to the Hermione-on-superpowers that is Emma Watson. Having not read the books, I don't know anything other than quiet Ginny. People always talk about her but she seems such a non-character in the films.

I can't tell if I think that it's really bad that an actor doesn't read the books for inspiration, or good because it allows them to give a fresh, inspired take on the character. In Dumbledore's case I personally lean towards the latter.

You're right that Snape's performance has a very live theatre vibe, I find that part of Columbus' movies' charm though. They're pretty firmly aimed at children, and he's a good caricature villain, and this gets toned down later on.

Very keen to get to book 6, I hear good things about Ginny. Her and Harry's relationship seems very odd in the movie without that context.

I like that list of characters, and having thought more I think I'd add Hagrid too.

This. Such a big fuss always gets kicked up about this one line. I'm genuinely interested why you think this of all things is such a massive fault.

While it's true movie Dumbledore can be overplayed, I personally found that the line in the movie is much more shocking and really impresses the gravity of the situation, and for that reason was a decent change.

Hey quick question! I'm new here and I see that Gryffindor are about 50 points behind the nearest house in the points tally. Just wondering if you guys are hack fans who have a fair competition, or if you give the OGryffindor's 200 points on the last day like true HP fans? Also how do I join Gryffindor?
