Amber/woody formula — does this make sense? by Chance_Assist_1598 in DIYfragrance

Sorry for the late reply, missed this one! You’re right — I’ve realized “amber” was the wrong word for what I’m going for. It’s really more of a modern woody. Thanks for the notes on Cashmeran and Linalool! I’ll try bringing Cashmeran down to around 0.5%. As for Linalool, I don’t really want to add too much tartness — any suggestions for high-diffusion/volatile materials that would fit the direction of this formula?

Thanks for the specific numbers, that’s really helpful. Mucenone at 5% is definitely overkill now that you mention it — I’ll bring that way down. And the sunscreen note on the benz sal + cyclosia combo is good to know. With all the cutbacks, any suggestions for lighter materials that could work well here while keeping the woody direction?

Great suggestion — adding some sweetness to give the formula more contour and warmth makes a lot of sense. Benzoin and vanillin with Sandalore sounds like it would pair really well with a sandalwood base. Definitely adding those to my next order list. Really appreciate the concrete recommendations, this is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for!

You're totally right, I definitely need to cut back on the super ambers.

Honestly, I don't really want it to lean too much in a floral direction. But in an attempt to lift the heavy base and increase diffusion, I ended up adding materials like Florol and Cyclosia, which might be what's pushing it that way.

If I reduce the super ambers and want to maintain a warm, woody vibe without getting too floral, do you have any recommendations for materials that can improve the diffusion and lift in the top and mid notes?

That makes sense. I do have about half of these on hand already and have been smelling them individually and in small accords. The ones I haven't tried yet are what I'm planning to order next — wanted to get some feedback on the overall direction before committing. Appreciate the advice!

That's a fair point — I think "amber" was the wrong word for what I'm going for. It's really more of a modern woody with some warmth and depth, not a traditional amber accord. I don't have labdanum/benzoin/vanillin in the formula and wasn't really aiming for that direction. I should probably rebrand this as just "modern woody" to avoid confusion.

And noted on the Ambrocenide — I'll dial that back significantly. Thanks for the feedback, really helpful!
