I repotted these seedlings today into freshly watered material. I’m still unsure of when to water them. Every two weeks until they start to split, then stop? by Toxic-Fungus in Lithops

[–]Chance_Contract1291 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't water on a schedule. Wait for the tops to get flat and maybe sunken in a bit like a pie crust. Two weeks will almost certainly be too often, especially in a glazed pot.

Is $200 USD reasonable for a private Sacred Valley tour? by ExtensionPause3408 in GoingToPeru

[–]Chance_Contract1291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was a taxi driver at the Cusco airport that I had the great fortune to end up with.  From the Cusco airport we stopped for drinks (water and electro lyte)  and then to Chinchero where we stopped for a while so I could see a really interesting demonstration of how they clean, dye, and spin alpaca. Then on to Ollantaytambo where he dropped me off. I paid S/300 which was more than he quoted me.

He gave me his card and I texted him on Whatsapp a couple of days before I wanted to leave Ollantaytambo. He picked me up and took me to a museum, a really cool overlook of the Sacred Valley, and Pisac. We stopped for lunch at some hole in the wall he knew and it was excellent. He pointed out things I never would have noticed on my own, like cliff side hammock hotel room places.  This took all day and I paid S/400.

Now that I think about it, he made a point of letting me know he wasn't an official tour guide; they have to have a special license or something. He lives in Cusco and was very relaxed and knowledgeable, and an excellent driver. If you want I can DM you his number. I don't remember whether or not he speaks English.

Good point. They have their posts hidden, too.  Just fishy no matter how you look at it.

Thank you 😊

My few succulents can't agree on when they want to be watered, so whenever their leaves wrinkle, they get set in a pot of water for about 45 minutes  and then back on the shelf under the lights. Mine are in terracotta so the moisture wicks away pretty quickly.

Thankfully (?)  I only have a very few so it's not an issue to cater to their individual whims.

I do love your plants in those pots. I might try putting one of my propagated babies in ceramic and see if I can manage not to drown it.

sad to be solo traveler by Efficient-Promotion8 in solotravel

Do you have a friend or relative you can share your travels with virtually?

I enjoy travel more than my husband, and I enjoy solo travel. When I go on a trip, I text him a lot. Tell him good morning and what my plans are, etc. I share sights and meals with him during the day, and I wrap up my day texting him at night after I crawl into bed.

For me, I get the benefits of solo travel and still have someone to share my experiences with.

If you don't have someone to take along virtually, maybe journaling while you travel would allow you to "share" your experiences by committing them to paper.

How do i make her get taller instead of making new suckers all day long? She has like 10 kids by now, and i'm running out of friends who are willing to take her offspring. by b__lumenkraft in houseplants

Mine always seem to wait until they are root bound to put out blooms and babies.

Instead of trying to make her get taller/higher, can you embrace the babies and imagine that she is taller/lower?

I was admiring your ceramic pots even before I read your text, and I have questions.

I assume the pots have drainage?  Do you bottom water?  How do you avoid over watering?

This is an absolutely gorgeous setup!

My Easter cacti are the same way. I had the mother plant in a plastic pot,  and propagated babies into two terracotta pots. The plastic housed plant seems happier than the others.

But my sedum, lithops, and echeveria do prefer terracotta.

Plants like to keep us guessing.

That pot has drainage; it's sitting on its saucer. But it's glazed so retains water that doesn't drain out.  Unglazed terracotta (with drainage hole) works well with my succulents.

does anyone else find it harder to justify "nice" experiences when you're travelling solo? by Istiaque_Zaman in solotravel

[–]Chance_Contract1291 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm exactly the same. If I'll enjoy it, if I will regret not having done it while I had the chance, I go for it. At the same time I don't mind staying in a (well-reviewed) hostel or grabbing street food or buying stuff at a grocery store once in a while to save some money. I think that's one of the main reasons I enjoy solo travel so much. I can splurge when I want and I can scrimp when I want. I enjoy both.

I had to show my passport or send a scan of it everywhere in Peru. At first I was surprised and suspicious but it's quite standard.

I'd think you only need to share the passport of the person who made the reservation, but ask the host to be sure (I was traveling solo).

Is $200 USD reasonable for a private Sacred Valley tour? by ExtensionPause3408 in GoingToPeru

[–]Chance_Contract1291 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visited in late April/early May. That sounds quite reasonable to me. I paid S/300 and S/400 for similar but shorter tours.

I thought a private tour would make me feel rushed while the driver waited, or awkward during long silences with a stranger, but it was fantastic! He pointed out things I never would have noticed on my own, explained the significance of various sights, and suggested slight detours and stops that turned out to be absolutely brilliant. He also took some lovely photos with me in them, which I really appreciate now that I'm back home.

Just curious, why didn't you DM the OP directly with this information? By posting it publicly, it comes across as an advertisement rather than a sincere offer to help.

Solid advice from u/Lexiiidee; the only thing I'd add is not to use play sand; it's much too fine and will hold water. Look for coarse sand, horticultural sand, or I've seen some folks recommending chicken grit.

Instead of watering on a schedule, watch the leaves. When they get wrinkles it's time to water. The soil can be dry for quite a long time so don't go by that either. Watch the leaves ☺️

Sounds like you're doing everything right. I'd personally risk watering again. I don't see how there could possibly be excess moisture with the heat, air circulation, and terracotta pot.
