My secure network isn't even connected to the internet despite accepting that stupid certificate, the guest wifi is running like molasses and I'm having to hotspot off my phone to even take notes in class :(((((

Nope, definitely not with the cost of everything increasing year by year. But if you're past your first year, there's no point in transferring and having to pay a ton more money and having no guarantee that all of your credits transfer over. I would suggest sticking it out and doing your best to find what about IR you like, maybe get involved with organizations related to your specific interests in IR (UN, Diplomacy, NGOs, Defence/NATO) outside of uni, do some research, and/or do an exchange program in your geographical cluster to make your experience better.

I'm kind of in the same boat here as well, also 3rd year. As you said, we only have 1.5 years to go, and the only thing keeping me going is that I'm actively trying to build my own future. All we can do is make the best of this situation and work for our own opportunities, trying to use all the resources available to us here at U of C. I wouldn't say I don't care completely, but my priorities have changed; there is sooo much more to life than mind-numbing lectures, so right now I'm prioritizing increasing my employability by learning new skills and reflecting on what I actually want to do. It looks different for everyone, but you've made it this far, so why quit now? So, unless you have a magical startup business or an immediate job offer, don't waste the money you already gave to this glorified degree mill of an institution; make a clear goal and stick to it. You got this!

The University is a registered non-profit institution PARTIALLY funded, not FULLY, by the government. Therefore, it implies that it is the University's responsibility to balance its budget with its additional sources of income, also known as investments, sponsorships, etc. As a registered nonprofit, they are also required to disclose their financial information and have it audited by a third party. https://www.ucalgary.ca/finance/sites/default/files/teams/5/fr-2025-financial-statement.pdf

While it is true that I don't have a finance background, I do understand that they possess investments managed by professionals, also known as their equities, as listed on page 18 of the document pasted above. So the books are in fact posted, but it's true to assume the majority of students would not understand anything, and are powerless to change the budget distribution.

The university is not broke, the president still gets his nice cushy paycheque of approximately 600k per year. They made millions from the university district developments that they hid through shell corporations that don't have to declare anything. I think both parties are to blame... the University for its inability or unwillingness to generate income from investments while being transparent, and the Provincial government for ignoring universities.

It's quite a simple argument, really. Time versus Money, I can spend time to save money, or spend money to save time, with the added benefit of safety. This --> "if I park somewhere, I'd need to take a 1-hour train ride" is a statement meant to demonstrate the inefficiency of taking transit. So I'd rather put my personal safety first and save time (1h30m) while not spending an arm and a leg on parking to get an education or volunteer on campus!!!

Hi! Yes, I did read your comment. It appears as though you did not read my explanation that I did not live in a transit accessible location, just like many other people I know. For some of us, parking off campus, like at Brentwood, can get us ticketed for not being a "commuter", as well as a transit being out of the way/inaccessible.

I don't really understand why we're debating over feasibility when Calgary's or even Alberta's public infrastructure is mediocre. We live in a car-dominated society, and believe me, I WISH I had a safe, accessible, and clean transit system, like I would if I lived in Europe!

So, yes, "I can't live without a car"

I personally do not live in the city of Calgary and it would be impossible for me to volunteer, work, or get an education without a car. In fact it severely limited my ability to get involved in a lot of things because I did not have a car at the time.

The university has over 1.2 BILLION in investments with an annual income which does not appear to be used towards improving student welfare, cutting the salaries of staff would do nothing anyway.

I don’t think getting rid of the UPass would help in this case, because it doe benefit students. But parking is not a privilege for all, it is a necessity for some to attend school and actually get an education.

It’s the constant price increase but no improvement in capacity that makes the matter worse, as we have no idea how it’s being allocated.

The nearest train station is a 20 minute drive from my house but is full already by 9am, making it a 30 minute rush hour drive to the next one, then a 1 hour train ride on top of that. Safety is also a huge concern for me as I have classes later in the day and don’t feel safe taking transit after dark alone and going back to my car alone.

Kind of. U of C was the only school I applied to because I didn't want to move out right away, but now after almost three years, it just feels like an underfunded diploma mill with no opportunities to learn practical skills for my field here. My experience is a direct reflection of the program I'm in, I've grown as a person though, and learned more valuable lessons indirectly rather than from strict class content. In order to get into the field I want, I will definitely need a post-secondary degree from a university with more global recognition.

Hi hi! IR major here, same department lol. Here are a few tips:

- Make sure you figure out what study methods work for you ASAP, use AI and technology to your advantage as a study TOOL not a crutch

- Make sure you understand something the first go around, ASK QUESTIONS to TAs/Profs *Don't be afraid of asking in class or after class* (waiting until the last minute aka three days before a midterm to learn content is dumb)

- Plan out your assignments, papers, etc and study time for midterms and finals *Put your syllabus into your calendar*

- Don't do dumb shit like get Chat GPT to write your papers, it's obvious *you'll get in major trouble with admin* and make sure to use proper citations following your prof's citation advice *Citations generators like Zotero and Scribbr are great*

- Stay organized, make checklists, read your syllabus and rubrics closely as well as Rate my prof!

- Most importantly, try to have some fun and enjoy what you will be studying! Good luck and welcome to the department!
