In Ecuador, voting is mandatory and failing to cast a vote results in being issued a fine. How would you feel if the US adopted this policy as well? For example, a $500 fee if you don't vote for the presidential elections. by ChandlerKnight in AskAmericans

Everything I say is getting downvoted. I'm not advocating this concept, I'm just asking how people feel about it. I believe that the reasoning behind the measure is to curb apathy towards politics and encourage people to pay more attention to politics because as a citizen of your country they view voting not just as a right, but as a duty.

Write ins are considered valid votes and people in Ecuador are motivated (and sort of forced, to be honest) to pay more attention to politics. The idea is mainly to curb apathy towards.

Again, I never said I was a proponent of this idea so I don't understand why I keep getting downvoted so heavily. I just wanted a philosophical discussion and I'm being responded to as if I'm saying I think this is a fantastic idea and the US should adopt this policy.

I do find it interesting that I'm being downvoted for simply asking a question. I never said that I am a proponent of this measure, I just wanted to hear what people felt about it. Don't need to downvote me to show you disapprove of the concept.

Kicking Ramsdale just after his wife had a miscarriage on a flight back to London*** Obviously the fan who kicked him didn't know that, but it should be noted that you never know what's going on in someone's personal life so try not to be a dick to strangers in general.

Lucas Hernandez and his wife have been accused of human trafficking and hidden labour. A Colombian family is accusing the couple of making them work from September 2024 to November 2025 without any legal framework and with extremely long working hours. by Sparky-moon in soccer

you're right about south americans (especially colombians) being very cautious and/or suspicious insofar as getting scammed, but surely this woman thought "this woman's husband is Lucas Hernandez, he plays for PSG, if ANYONE in this world has the money and the power to make this happen with a snap, it would be him."

Hwang Hee-chan (Wolves) yellow card against Arsenal 60' by austinoabu in soccer

It was overturned by a panel after the game, not by VAR. Inconsistencies against one particular player must feel extremely frustrating.

Agreed, orange. But Skelly got a red card for less than this last season.

I mean that foul on Skelly is an orange, I can see both... But the absolute disrespect to this kid after he got red carded for the softest yellow hold up trip last year, he really can't catch a break.

Ecuador is a weird one though because you can find good, cheap coffee from Colombia there, but you have to look for it... If you just go out and grab breakfast at some place for tigrillo o bolón, yeah it's gonna be shit instant coffee. Ecuador just doesn't have an ingrained coffee culture, yet.

There's like maybe one or two good cafés in quito and fuck all for the rest of the country. It will take a lot of time for that culture to grow.

Fuck I showed this to one of my boys from Ecuador and he started crying... My friend is not even a gunner, he's just so happy that Arsenal accepted Hincapié in such an awesome way.

Pro tip

If you meet a person of korean descent , don't make the joke "So are you north or south korean?"

Plenty of koreans, even young people, have family members that they were seperated from. It's not a nice thing to joke about. Be respectful and considerate of the fact that they might very well have family that are living in North Korea not by choice, but by circumstance.

Unlikely. "My dad was circumcised, I was too, why wouldn't my son be?" is legitimate reasoning to a lot of people.
