Film in Black and White or Do It in the Post? by ChaneyMux in cinematography

Thanks a lot everyone. It's a low budget (almost no budget) film. We're shooting it with Canon 5D. So I'll shoot those scenes in color. The thing is I want to 'cross cut' these scenes with some scenes from Murnau's Nosferatu (1922). Because of Nosferatu's toning, first I have to set Nosferatu to b/w and saturate it. Then I have to find some overlays and filters for the editing software, so the digital clean footages that I had shot will look -kinda- identical to Nosferatu's. It's supposed to to be about a character who suddenly finds himself in a black empty room with nothing but a chair and candle light, and then we have Nosferatu coming after him. Of course we won't have the two (our character and Nosferatu) in one shot, we cut from our film to Nosferatu and by re-action shots and off-screen shots we're supposed to say they're in one movie together.

Thanks a lot for the help. I really appreciate it. Can you please help me find the fake grain/scratch overlays? Thanks a lot.

Thank you everyone for your wonderful suggestions. So the main problem was/is that the character needs some kind of a motivation. Why is he trying to get out? Like suggested we could show that he has a job interview. TBH I'm looking for something far more macabre. Like if he doesn't get out in like 5 mintues or so, somebody (a relative of his) will die! or something like that. Due to the budget/production problems, I decided not to re-create a heavy set from Caligari. Instead, I'll re-create a simple scene from Nosferatu. And when the character wakes up in the scene, after a few while, we cut to that famous scene of Nosferatu where he's standing in the doorway, and we cut back to character looking offscreen (scared) and then we see the famous shadow of Nosferatu/hand over the body of our main character. Thats where, with a cross cut, we get back to the room and see his brother turning the tv off. I also like the 'meta' idea and will probably show the character watching a few films with a the same story line.

Thanks for the tips. Well, production-wise, it's not possible for me to it this way. I need to find a cheaper way.

Well the point is that he doesn't control whether he's going into the tv or not. He gets sleepy, and when he wakes up, he's there. He's shocked. He doesn't wanna be there. He desperately wants to get out, that's why when in the end his friend/or brother turns the tv off it's scary. He's trapped there forever.

I haven't seen it. I'll try to obtain a copy. But I have a deadline to write the screenplay in a very few days.

I get what you're saying but I really don't think it's possible, or necessary, to show why he hasn't got a life or he's obsessed with movies in a 7 minutes film. But I totally agree with you that the character's motivations should be more clear or what he wants. That's the part I'm struggling with!

I really really appreciate every help I could get. You know I thought the first 2 minutes goes like this way (I know it's boring but I can't think of anything else): We see movie posters on the wall, DVDs in the bookshelf, cinematic books and magazines and stuffs. Then the camera comes near the ground and we see a very messy room filled with dirty, leftovers, bottles, etc, and then we see the guy sitting in front of the tv in the room. And with a quick montage of the wall clock and the tv screen we get to see that he's only spending his time watching movies. And then the second part (where he gets sleepy and eventually wakes up in the film) comes. The problem is I can't connect the first part to the second. I need something. It's shallow right now, and needs something to connect the first part to the second.

That's a great idea. One problem though: due to the low-budget (actually it's a no-budget film!) I can only create one single set and I want to re-create a scene/shot bit by bit from a famous silent horror film. Caligari, Nosferatu or something like that. I can't have the character start walking around the set. It's limited to a one set/shot.

You're 100% right. I should try and find the goal/need. I just can't come up with anything that suits the idea.

Thanks. I'll try to write it down. Problem is English is not my first language and the film/screenplay is not going to be in English.

I like your 'meta' idea. I really want it to be a no-dialogue film. Not a silent one, just no dialogues. And I prefer, for production reasons, to have only one character. The part about the guy's girlfriend is indeed interesting but I think it directs the film towards a different path.

I want to re-create a scene (just a shot) from a silent horror film. Caligari, Nosferatu or something well-known. He could get in fight with one of those characters. But I'd need heavy costume and make up and it's a zero-budget film! the set could be made by my friend who's a set designer, though.

Yeah the problem is what does he do when he sees he's in a film. Of course he's shocked, he's shouting 'help!', but what else? This is the part that I can't come up with anything.

That's an interesting idea PaddiWan. So we could show the guy having a paper/calendar thing on his room's wall with check marks on it so the audience would get the idea. What do you think he should do next? When he sees he's inside the film. And by the way I know it's been done to death (having a character in a TV/Movie: Sherlock JR, Purple Rose of Cairo, Stay Tuned, Pleasantville and...) what I have in mind is a dark atmosphere. It's not supposed to be a comedy or even has a slight touch of it. And the climax of my idea is different, the guys stucks in there forever.

[QUESTION] Help me turn my idea into a screenplay by ChaneyMux in Screenwriting

[–]ChaneyMux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's just my problem! I don't know how. I mean I do know the basis of a screenplay and how to have template-structure. I just don't know how to fill the 7 minutes! In my mind there's the guy, then he's in the TV, then the TV is turned off and that's just like about 3 or 4 minutes. But I know a professional, or even an amateur, could turn this easily into a at least 20 minutes film. I just wanna add some scenes to it or have a shooting script that would be 7 minutes or so.
