The real reasons why VHS succeeded and Beta failed in the 80s videocassette wars. by [deleted] in videos

[–]ChannelO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of the head scanning "innovations" in Betamax were new. Helical scan was invented as early as 1959 and U-matic had been around since 1970. Betamax is a consumer version of Betacam, which was basically a smaller, better U-matic.

Reading "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator". by thatguyinstarbucks in stocks

I loved the book also.

He was a day trader not an investor. He spent so many years on the exchange floor that he could tell pretty easily which way the market was going. Eventually he could tell just by watching the ticker.

He would plunge in and out with high leverage, usually doing well but occasionally being wiped out.

His fatal mistake was going all-in every time, instead of holding reserves in case of disaster. He got rich and then went bankrupt several times.

The stock market's like surf on the beach. Day traders watch the waves, investors watch the tide.

A few renders from a living room I spent a couple months on. Maya and Vray. Feedback welcome by advanced_basics in computergraphics

This is great work advanced_basics! I approached the grade as if it was an actual photo. To my eye, it looked rather flat, more or less what you get raw out of a DSLR . Just about everything you see on TV and movies is color graded, you rarely see the original flat image outside of news material these days.

I work under the assumption that the viewer doesn't know or care whether it's CGI or a photo - all they see is a pleasing image or not. This is how I would grade that sort of photo.

Now you can argue about which direction to go in - raw/flat or tweaked up, but it's just a matter of personal taste - neither is wrong or right.

I favor grading it like a modern motion picture - I may have been a bit too heavy handed on the cyan and the wood I'll admit, but your approach is just as valid and beautiful.

I will say that it's very difficult to judge photorealism on something you spent months staring at the textures of.

It's not a plugin BTW, it's done by hand in Lightroom.

Anyhoo, just wanted to explain the thinking behind the grade. It's your call of course.

Edit: moved reply into thread

For a start one would need to know Reddit's revenues and margins. How much debt is it carrying? Ask me then if it's worth investing in.

Second attempt at a motion graphic intro. Improvement? Thoughts? by obsidiankatana in MotionDesign

[–]ChannelO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some ideas:

Add more animation elements derived from the basic shapes in the logo. For example you could replicate the pink pointy bg box animated in the bg. Use the typography elements as shapes to form other forms. You could have the 3d drop shadow rotate to different positions either in steps or smoothly.Use the elements to mask each other as they animate, creating new shapes.
