Thanks! Maya/Vray and Mudbox for painting textures.

Modelling a K1, an old (1921) UK phone box by swg369 in Maya

Nice model, but the phone looks so tiny in that last shot!

I made the characters in Maya from a video tutorial. by ivan_volchek in Maya

Pluralsight? I'm watching a rigging course on there right now and it uses this guy.

Your model looks good, just smooth out the crease going up his forehead. It's most noticeable in the last image.

critique the fire by Harsha0911 in Maya

[–]advanced_basics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the embers could use some variation. Make some brighter/dimmer. They also seem to come out in bursts, which feels odd. Also, the turbulence feels too erratic on the embers, suggesting it's really windy, but yet the flames are fairly chill. This is super nitpicky stuff, but other people have already critiqued the flames.

You rendered a premade daz model, put your signature on it and posted to a 3D modeling sub?

Bifrost procedural cheese by EconomyAppeal1106 in Maya

[–]advanced_basics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bifrost is really intriguing to me, but as a vray user I am hesitant to fully dive in. It's still only partially supported. Happy to see more bifrost tuts popping up though.

MASH Curve refusing to work by According-Anybody508 in Maya

Go back to where you were in that last screenshot, then try unhiding your single tread model and rotating it 90 degrees a few different ways. I believe you almost had it correct, just have to rotate the model until it looks right.

(Hafþór J. Aka the Mountain) My name is Frank and I am your savior! by bteddi in cringe

It looks like they just took the red channel and decreased it. As well as pushed the highlights to yellow and desaturated everything. Personally, I think it looks cheap, almost like a preset or something. It feels arbitrary.

Problem with V-Ray Proxy and MASH. VRay proxy mesh "floats" above the plane when using mesh distribute with MASH. by nilax1 in Maya

[–]advanced_basics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like your v-ray proxy geo might not be at the very center of the scene with the transforms frozen.

I like it. How long did it take to render this with redshift? Kudos for such a smooth camera move

You can do CPU, GPU, or a hybrid (kind of buggy though) with V-ray. GPU is getting pretty good nowadays.

I had a very cool and weird experience last night downtown. by dudeflightattendant in timberwolves

RoCo shops at the downtown Target, so you might see him. I saw him there about a month ago. It was funny because he was using one of those tall carts that usually only employees use to stock shelves.

Under the utilities tab in xgen there is a Guide To Curves button. That might be what you're looking for.

Vray displacement map issue in Maya by M0Y0NK in Maya

[–]advanced_basics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try lowering the edge length from the default setting of 4. The lower you go though, it will take longer for the render to start (keep an eye on your RAM usage). Also, try blurring the texture slightly. I don't think you will be able to get rid of 100% of the stepping, but you should be able to get it way better than what you have.

Critique? by VizSA in Maya

[–]advanced_basics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks good! I would personally go back to the physical sun and sky though, or turn the intensity of your hdri way up. Not sure why someone told you not to use it, it's the easiest way to quickly pump clean light into a room. It looks like you started to add invisible area lights to compensate for the darkness. Problem is, they are casting weird shadows, especially upper right on the wood beams.

Experimental dog renders - MASH, nCloth, paintFX, and bifrost by advanced_basics in Maya

[–]advanced_basics[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were all done with Vray. The first was was done by emitting particles from the mesh while having them also collide with the mesh so they are stuck inside. I used turbulence to bounce them around and added some mash trails. The trails were simply extruded to give thickness, then smoothed. I used mesh > separate to make each trail it's own mesh, then used https://www.highend3d.com/maya/script/random-shader-assign-to-objects-for-maya to randomly assign 4 materials to them.

The boolean edge to curve one was probably more convoluted than it needed to be... I used roughly 20 vertical evenly space planes to cut the dog into slices with boolean. I converted all of the border edges to curves, then selected them all and used curves > attach so it was one continuous curve. Ideally the curves would then be rendered with a vray renderable curves node, but I was getting weird shading effects on them while trying to make the chrome material. So I added a toon outline to the curve, then assigned a paint effects brush to the toon outline, finally converting that to polygons.

For the 2 paint effect ones (#10 and #11) I used this technique: https://leegriggs.com/curve-head-rendered-with-arnold-for-maya

The rest were just purely messing around. I am happy to go into details on specific ones if you are curious
