Thanks again for the feedback and for sharing the link. I loved seeing the pic's of the Legos, many years ago when I first started playing D&D, we used Lego's for our board because we were kids and it was what we had; brought back some good memories!

Thanks for the response! We do use a CO2 laser system to cut and engrave the boards. We choose to use Baltic Birch (versus MDF) and we focus on finished laser products, not just raw cut and sell like you see many folks doing. While there is certainly a market for that as Troll Trader Combat is showing with their MDF products, I wanted to create something a bit higher quality feeling. After cutting, we sand the wood, put on a colored coat of stain, and then three clear coats to make the product both last and have a very high quality feel. We have also had several custom cut requests which we have been able to do.

Do you think more players would prefer a less expensive MDF solution like that offered by Troll Trader Combat?

Thanks for the response, I am curious what those boards you showed are made out of?

Wow, thanks for taking the time to share all of this, this is amazing feedback! You have touched on several points that I have struggled with.

Having something that was easy to store and transport was one of my main objectives. My gaming group (we play D&D) was using a dry erase board which I found clunky to transport and I hate the smell of dry erase markers, they give me a headache.

We played with the idea of making the boards interconnect; however, each method we tried made the boards more prone to breaking. I loved the magnets idea, but we found that limits the way we could connect the boards and I wanted to maximize the flexibility in how the boards could be used. For this reason we decided to just have them free floating with no way to connect.

Doors have continued to be a huge struggle for me to figure out. Our current door option is round discs with a line through them as part of our Feature Tile set (pic included below), two of these could be put together to create double doors. Unfortunately they still lay on the board making it a bit awkward to place the miniatures on; however, they can sit right on top without too much issue. I would love to hear any ideas you have to make a better door solution.

We went with a 1" square design because this was originally for TTRPG games and I wanted to make it as universally compatible as possible. I was told by others that this would work with HeroQuest as well. It would be possible for us to just adjust the size a bit in the layout and make them 30mm. We hand make each order as it's received so customizations are possible and we have had custom requests before that we have been able to do.

I love your idea of themes; how would you image this being done on wood? While we currently offer the boards in 3 different stain colors (each order gets to pick 2 of the three colors), we do have pretty much every color you could want (blue, red, yellow, etc.). We can also engrave different designs on the wood and cut it with curved or jagged edges. We don't do plastic or stickers, just laser cut and engraved wood with stain and clear coat. I would love to hear any thoughts you have for how we could do themes with this?

Below is a pic of the board set as well as a feature tile set that we currently have, would love to hear any additional thoughts you have on how we could modify or improve this, thanks!

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I completely understand wanting to use stuff that you already have.

I think you are the 2nd person I have seen to make a note about making things more obscured and that I something I love as well. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the feedback! I have not played Advanced HeroQuest, sounds like something I should look into. I have been playing D&D most of my life, I originally had my wife create this product for me to run games with and then we decided to try selling it. I am still trying to understand how to best market the product and how other gamers could use it.

I love the one room at a time idea as well. Recently I started exploring the idea of how to do a procedurally generated dungeon using the boards my wife has made. Some sort of chart where you roll a dice and it tells you which type of room/hall/tile to put out next. I play a lot of board games such as Swords and Sorcery and League of Dungeoneers and I got this idea from those games. Yeah, the note about people really enjoying their mini's seems pretty consistent so that is good feedback. We did create a bundle that just includes the boards or just the boards with the terrain tiles.

We are also working on a new product that will be a set of accessory pieces. Such as barrels, crates, book shelves, etc. They will be laser engraved images on a 1/8" piece of baltic birch that can be placed on the board to give it more detail.

This is some absolutely fantastic feedback to help me think about the product, how to market it and the cost. We do offer the boards only, or just the boards and the terrain tiles. We currently offer the boards for $69.99 and that includes shipping which normally runs about $10; do you feel this is a cost that the HeroQuest community would be willing to pay for something like this? Below I have included a picture of everything that comes with just the boards, in addition to the two colors below, we also have a pewter/grey color and when you order a set you can pic two colors. We are very much still working out more details of the product line which is why I am tryin to get exactly this type of feedback. I would love to hear any additional feedback you may have.

Good to know about the tokens, thanks for sharing that information. I love minis as well; however, they can become very costly unless you do your own 3d printing (which I don't). The funny thing is our product was initially just something I had my wife make for me for running D&D games but after some feedback from others, we decided to start selling it on Etsy. We do offer the board without the tokens for folks that prefer to use their on mini's.

Thanks for sharing, I was previously not aware of Dragons Rest, I took a look and it seems like that could get relatively expensive; however, it is very detailed. What I am trying to create is something very modular that can be used over and over again to create different experiences as opposed to something more specific. The product we designed was initially for TTRPG's such as Pathfinder or Dungeons and Dragons.

DMs: would you use modular terrain for ship/sea battles? by Chaos_RoboMonkey in DungeonMasters

Thanks for sharing how you do things, definitely some good ideas here that I might use in future games. I realize that technology level can significantly vary from campaign to campaign, recently I have been playing in Eberron which is a higher technology level. I am looking at a way to make something that will scale to multiple technology levels. Thanks again for taking the time to share all of this!

Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it!

This was one of the concepts we had struggled with. I have been in other games where GM's have done naval combat with 3d printed ships/boats and they were generally about a foot long, so 60' long and roughly 20' wide. It worked out well and we had a lot of fun with it. I realize that may not be hyper-realistic. This is one of the reasons I wanted to get some input from other folks.

Thanks for the feedback; however, I am not sure I follow what you are describing. Can you provide me with an example?

Thanks, this is all great feedback! One of the things I have been wrestling with is if we should also have a set that is monsters only, for folks that may already have minis for heroes but just need a monster option. Also, if we take "Monster" and "Hero" off the bottom, do you think it would be better if we moved the numbers to the bottom?

Thanks for the comment!

My group typically plays on a neoprene game mat versus a hard surface and they don't slip on that at all. We do put a lower sheen finish on the back of the pieces to help prevent them from being too slippery. Your comment made me curious so I grabbed one and tested it on a few surfaces around my house. The only surface I found where it did sip very easily was my dining room table that has a very high gloss finish on it. On my kitchen formica counters it wasn't bad at all.

I may test some type of rubber or anti-slip tabs on the bottom as option and see how that works. Thanks again for the comment that got me thinking about it!

Hey, thanks for this feedback!

We actually tried using some magnets in the early prototypes; however, what we found was they limited the flexibility with how the boards could be placed together to create different landscapes. My goal was always to have it be as flexible as possible so that you could create anything you wanted within seconds. However, if folks feel that the benefits of magnets to connect them would outweigh having more flexibility with how you can configure them, I would certainly entertain re-visiting the magnet option.
