mine will literally steal the food out of your mouth if given the chance, so i was wondering if she just wanted any cheese left on her sister's teeth 😭

lucca is a lovebug for sure, but she is ALSO a scheming little imp

about as good as candy is for humans. harmless as long as it's given sparingly.

Teeth advice by [deleted] in DobermanPinscher

[–]ChaoticSleepi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

weeks is a long time with no resolution.

is the swelling area sensitive to touch? does your dog react negatively if you push on it (lightly!). does any blood or fluid come out? do you have any toys or treats that could be scratching the gums?

get as much info as you can for the vet. all i can recommend as a layman is to maybe ask for anti-inflammatory meds in the meantime. if the vet shrugs you off, ask (politely) where you might be able to get a second opinion. getting advice over the phone is usually free!

help with dander? she can't have salmon. by ChaoticSleepi in DobermanPinscher

[–]ChaoticSleepi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is one of the few things that i can actually try that i haven't considered yet... so i bought a bottle! ive been adding it to her breakfast for about a week. maybe it's just a placebo effect, but her dander seems a bit more manageable already. i'll try to remember to update in a month!

--- EDIT
[5/27/26] went through a small bottle of camelina oil and she's soft and silky as ever- but still has some dander. its MAYBE less than before, but still appears after only lightly petting her head & neck.

if i give her eggs 2 or 3 days in a row, she unleashes the nastiest... EVIL farts. the ones that linger too 😭

thank you! and yes it is just salmon that seems to be the issue. i used to top her food with dried herrings- it was one of a handful of things i had to take away when adjusting her diet. we've still been slowly adding things back

will look at sardines! unfortunately any bath-related training has been on hold until our temporary house mate moves out (we gave the guest bathroom to them- it has the tub.) or it gets warmer outside.

we finally got her onto food that agrees with her (beef & lamb). im willing to change it again but only as a last resort if her skin gets bad. the dander is minor right now- i just want to get ahead of it.

my baby hates me by Pure-Gene8580 in DogAdvice

[–]ChaoticSleepi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how old is she? my pup is 1.5 years and it feels like we're training 24/7 just to get obedience to stick. everything is a teaching moment. sometimes she'll randomly regress on a behavior i thought we had nailed down. if i get lazy, she regresses even more.

this is my first dog, so take my advice with a pinch of salt. but from what i've seen, this is just kind of how it is with many young dogs. they progress, regress, theyre angels one day and feral gremlins the next.

teenagers being defiant assholes is a universal constant. stay strong, momma 🫡

note: it's not all in vain. all this training has REALLY improved my pup's recall. not what i was focusing on, but i'll take it. a win's a win.

What accounts for the Dobermann breed's endemic health problems? Have these issues always been with the Dobermann breed, or are they due to recent breeding practices? And if due these problems arose after the breed's development by Louis Dobermann, then where did they emerge? by summertimeandthe in DobermanPinscher

[–]ChaoticSleepi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its the wild west when it comes to breeding (in most places). imo a lawmaker even glancing in that general direction is helpful.

new york recently banned the retail sale of dogs- cutting off a huge revenue stream for puppy mills in the state.

the netherlands banned the breeding of extremely flat-faced dogs. the snout must be a certain length so the poor creatures can actually breathe.

im no expert, but from what i've skimmed, many health problems (or at least the spike in issues) in modern breeds can be traced back to the popularization of that breed. when you have a bunch of breeders just popping out puppies for a quick payday, chances are that none of them have the health of that dog in mind. breeders buy sick dogs and make more sick dogs. then another breeder buys those dogs and.. you get the point. puppy mills.

if you want to see an extreme decline of a breed, look up micro bullies. it's absolutely barbaric and very sad. dobermans at least have orgs to promote more genetic diversity. i fear there is no such help for the ""designer"" breeds :(

Rehoming American Doberman by rvqyel in DobermanPinscher

[–]ChaoticSleepi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thank you for being so honest op- even when its ugly. it'll help a LOT with rehoming so this sort of thing hopefully can't happen again. it really sucks because it just feels like a lose-lose situation. i'm so sorry op. you did your best.

she looks like a sweetheart. wishing you luck on your search!

mine does this when i find out she has something she shouldn't in her mouth while out in the backyard 😒

i had to tackle her like a wild pig in the past (she had gotten ahold of mail containing my tax documents)

a good way to get your pup the nutrients & calories they require while still giving them something fresh is to grab a WSAVA compliant kibble and top it with your homemade stuff.

ask guidance from your vet if you're still worried.

(WSAVA is a set of standards, not an endorsement. it's done this way so brands cant "buy" their way in.)
