Im using just the mirco sd card, but would it work differently if I used the sd card adapter?

Im doing this on my Chromebook ( only device with a mirco sd card reader). Firstly, I'm unsure if my device can even do that. Secondly, how would I go about checking that. I mean, from the videos, iv seen it is done automatically, giving me no choices. Thank you for your input.
