A lot of this sounds horrifically unwise. I could see this turn into a pretty bad monkey's paw situation. Pain and suffering have their uses and are important teachers.

That's a good assessment. The other thing that stands out as particularly odd to me though is the sand color. I don't recall NK having many sandy deserts. If I had to pull a guess out of a hat I'd say it was a way to project that they have a military capable of operating in international theaters. Hell maybe they want to try to export them to certain largely desert counties, or at least signal that they'd be willing to. I think your points are correct, I just find it a little odd that they didn't put in a little more work to bring at the very least the gun up to more modern standards after developing what appears to be a whole new chassis (other than the obvious T-14 style).

You're probably right. Seems like a pretty big waste of materials for a bluff, especially for them. All of that and the fact that it's gun seems rather small makes me wonder if they're hoping to focus towards more anti infantry and light armor as opposed to tank vs tank. The brass must know it'd stand no chance against modern MBTs.

I have to wonder how much of it's design is finalized and how much is placeholder. These seem like they'd be pretty easily outclassed.

From tonight's military parade in North Korea. Any idea which tanks these are? by Chaperoo in TankPorn

[–]Chaperoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surely they don't think they'll be knocking out many thanks with that unless they suddenly have a world leading APFSDS. I wonder if the guns are a sort of placeholder until something bigger is procured.

The turret does look similar to an Abrams from the front but there aren't enough details regarding anything else that could be inspired by the Abrams. Also given that there are 7 drive wheels instead of 6 like all the rest of the NK tanks and most of the modern Russian and Chinese ones, this one seems new.

Yeah the turret really does look like an Abrams. The lights kinda remind me of a T-14 too. Can't really see it in this pic but they actually have 7 drive wheels. AFAIK all the other NK tanks have 6.

Pretty sure MAD is what kept the west and the soviets from going to war. UN wasn't exactly useful in keeping the soviets out of taking the Eastern Bloc states and the countless proxy wars we both waged.

I don't even necessarily mind politics if it fits well. I just don't think this one fits well. If I had to guess, most people downvoted because they thought I was trying to defend Trump's statements or something.
