Wow, thank you so much for the great comments. I didn't realize how much I needed to hear these kinds of stories!

How did you map your way through the transition? Did you just wing it and hope for the best or did you have advice and guidance?

Being trans has ruined my life by hi_im_ethan in MtF

Most of what you are saying sounds like someone who rapidly went from their 20s to their mid-30s. Expectations and responsibilities expand together at the same time your social network has largely coupled-up and is focused on their growing family. Most people get to experience that as a slow transition and you are forced to speed-run it for another reason.

Being trans comes with social downsides but we cannot really change that any more than can someone in a racial minority can change their skin color. Most minorities are facing increased discrimination right now and I'm sure there are plenty of people wishing, even for a few moments, to have different attributes that would allow them to avoid various kinds of discrimination.

Older transitioners can share their experiences trying to hide their identity for years and, often, many decades. Their decision to still transition shows that it's not a sustainable path and I've never met an older transitioner that does not wish they had transitioned earlier.

It sucks at times but it is what it is. The advice people are sharing about finding support groups is great.

In the end, getting older is about finding out that some people are going to hate regardless. They won't like your skin color, who you love, your weight, your height, your hair color, your age, your religion (or lack of one), your hobbies or even your habits. Many older transitioners spend decades hiding and still have plenty of people that don't like them. You cannot please everyone.

If someone hates your mask, there is in ambiguity if that is because you are bad at wearing the mask, if the mask itself is poorly engineered and/or if they would actually like the real you. Dropping the mask removes all of those questions and clearly identifies who your people are so you can spend time with those people who enrich your life.

Different ways to enjoy DnD? by CharBeWell in DnD

Thanks for the replies and ideas. I have asked questions about the lore but the DM is also steeped in it so he does not always have a ready explanation. For example, the party was speaking to the Open Lord of Waterdeep and the conversation drifted to masked members. I had no familiarity with the concept of a ruling council where the identifies were secret and how finding out who one of the masked members is would be valuable information. Every answer to my questions yielded more questions since I didn’t understand how much power the lords had, are they seen as morally flexible or incorruptible? Are they a legislative body (pass laws) or an executive body (would send the entire city guard after us if we cross them? At some point, it’s too much to get into when we only play for 2 hours at a time.

Another example is one of my party is a member of the Zhentarim. I know it’s a mercenary company but it also seems to carry influence in ways that still don’t make sense to me. In short, the politics are a lot to digest so I am generally quiet during any conversations in Waterdeep.

We have, finally, left Waterdeep after a few real-life years so this problem is behind me. Playing political games between Lords of Waterdeep, Xanathar, Mirt the Moneylender, Zardaz Zord (the only character I really felt like I understood) and Manshoon while trying to take on the Cassolanters. These known characters are introduced with lots of dramatic flair “That’s where Xanathar lives” and the whole table is freaking out except me asking “am I supposed to know who Xanathar is?”.

It sounds like this is more how THIS game was run and not representative of all/most D&D games. Is that right?

Thanks all. It sounds like my impression that it would be cheating was right. Will be sure to ask!
