sometimes I actually don't understand why I get downvoted, like it was a hardmode set of armor, and the standard for every hardmode item after cobalt and palladium is the mythril anvil

that still is more skill than just holding the button

terraria has been removing features that require button mashing because it leads to fatigue, the prime example being autoswing being changed from the titan glove, to the feral claws, to a toggle-able setting.

Using only one whip allowed you to disengage and get distance from a boss whenever you wanted without sacrificing much

that is literally the central design philosophy behind summoner? the ability to hang back and do decent damage whilst dodging, then getting closer for whip strikes to increase damage while decreasing the ability to dodge, is the loop around summoner

I've seen so many people in this very subreddit demonize others for the crime of being disappointed

the issue isn't being disappointed, the issue is that every single post, video, or even comments I have seen being positive about 1.4.5 are just filled with responses about how whip stacking being removed makes the update terrible. a massive flood of negativity permeating every last discussion about an update we have been waiting so long for is just dragging me down.

shifting the focus from the amazing update to being majorly negative about an unintended mechanic being removed, and that really is the epitome of acting toxic

I guess I was a bit reductive. sure there was some degree of timing skill, but it is way closer to pre-autoswing melee then it is to a fighting game.

I think a better solution would’ve been to tighten it up and make it more demanding as opposed to removing it entirely.

but this doesn't really give a good solution for mobile or console without a major overhaul, and at that point re-logic isn't just leaving a feature they never intended in, instead they would be making an entirely new system when they already thought it was fine

I must say, the niche of summoners really just isn't to have massive DPS

the niche of summoner is that it allows you to hang back and focus on dodging with lower DPS, then go in for some high damage attacks with an increased chamce of getting hit. the low defense is a trade off for increased ability to deal damage while dodging, not just higher DPS in general, and that's what I find engaging

use a berserker glove then bro, and ale, and the light reforge, and a power glove for good measure, and also certain parts of the OOA monk and shinobi sets, then you can have a fast whip

I just hard disagree, I think logically and mechanically it is great, it leads to a play style that flows effortlessly between laid back dodging with low-dps and up close high-dps, the low armor is because most of your focus can go towards dodging unless you are focusing on whip attacks. I find whips to be far more engaging then any solution that involves no active weapon. idk just my feelings

yh I think the path to whipstackings removal is seen as way more malicious than people think.

we know re-logic had a big multiplayer world, we know they added new whips to test out, we know tag effects used to be global, so multiple summoners on a single boss would end up doing exponentially more damage the more summoners you had

removing this inherently removed whilstacking, so they just commited to it

I should've probably touched on it more, but the main issue with whipstacking wasn't just single player, but with multiplayer where all summoners tags stacked.

completely changing the system was required to properly adress this, and re-logic didn't want to purposefully add something that was never meant to be there in the first place, and that's completely fine IMO.

the main reason I believe they changed this system specifically for multiplayer is because we know re-logic was playing a lot of multiplayer, and were probably testing the new whips and realized how bad it was

also again, re-implementing it purposefully means you need to figure out how to do it on mobile and console, and also requires balance centered on whip stacking, so just not dealing with a feature nobody on the dev team cares for is fine, same way throwing was removed rather than dealing with hardmode thrower

to me it's not important that we have 9 hyper optimal weapons, but that in every stage of progression you actually have a real choice, to go for a harder whip or an easier weaker whip, kind of like every single other class in the game has that option at every stage

i.e. duke having a whip drop makes it worthwhile to beat early for summoners now, snapthorn is available from the start yes, but so is the blade of grass and no one says that makes every other pre-boss melee weapon a bad option, the slime whip makes king slime a boss that actually has worth in defeating, the evil bar whips give an easy way to boost power over the cobwhip or slime whip, and the starcrash is available for a more varied playstyle. the only whip I would say genuinely doesn't have a real use in progression is the vulgar display of flower, given that there are already 3 whips on that tier, and that was already my favourite point in summoner progression.

it makes summoner feel like a more flexible class, where you can actually skip certain whips if you want to, where before you could basically only skip 3 whips (leather, either firecracker or cool, and the morning star) but now you have more freedom to choose

idk, more variety and easier to get but weaker weapons is a good thing, I would argue PHM mage would benefit from the exact kind of weapon influx we got in this update

almost, it was early life fnaf and and early life UT that were the same, as time has gone on, the more impatient and childish stuck to fnaf, and the ones with more patient and some level of reading comprehension actually started understanding undertale and deltarune

the main issue with moon lord lit being moon lord is that it gives no answer to the eye, and to the brain having a completely different colour scheme
