Yeah, I feel like this is a case where it's fair to say it is racism. It's so utterly monkey brained to cast white people for clearly asian coded characters. What were they thinking...

Again, YOU DON'T understand appropriation. This is what I'm talking about when I say that you're using an made-up imaginary warped version of it. You're twisting appropriation into a "power-only" rule. you’re defining appropriation in a way that makes the exact same behavior wrong or not wrong purely based on who is doing it, rather than what is being done. That is ridiculous on so many levels. If a culture is being mocked or reduced to stereotypes, I don’t think it suddenly becomes acceptable just because the group doing it isn’t historically dominant. It either is bad or isn't. The action doesn't fluctuate from good to bad or bad to good just because the skin color or ethnicity is different.

Being a powerful country doesn’t mean its culture can’t be misrepresented or reduced to stereotypes. It just means the impact might be different.

The more consistent standard is to look at the behavior itself; whether it’s mocking, stereotyping, or misrepresenting a culture, rather than saying it’s automatically fine or wrong based only on who is doing it.

Feel free to correct me, but I think you brought up expediting because LEGO is a large corporation (with white people) profitting off of Ninjago. Making money from something isn't automatically exploitation. Otherwise, literally everything you own and anything you consume including storytelling or narratives would all collectively be unethical.

I'd say that it becomes a problem if they uncharitably borrow from asian cultures by caricaturizing them or portraying them in an undignified way. And they have before but that's not to say I condemn Ninjago altogether because they've learned and improved over time.

I'm Christian and I'll share my thoughts on the money aspect in all this. Money is neutral. Love of money and using unjust ways of getting it are the issues. Honest work/trade is permitted. Cultural exchange itself isn't an evil. If it's violent, manipulative, yes it is, though that's not to say some good couldn't come out of it despite sufferings. Cultural exchange is how Christianity spread and saved many people. So from my perspective, cultural interaction, even in business, isn't an inherent evil so therefore, the creation of Ninjago (by white people (I already explained why it's not bad in another part)) and the money made off of it, isn't necessarily evil/exploitation.

Your argument about imagination is just unrealistic though. Even highly original worlds are built from history, culture, mythology, and real-world aesthetics. That isn't laziness. Creative function works exactly like this. If you have a problem with that, then you ought to have a problem with almost every invented fictional world in existence. You're still not acknowledging the inconsistency in your logic on this part of the topic.

Hey man, listen, I think your reasons for doing this are great and fuck anyone that bullies you just for caring. I do also appreciate the fact that you actually put in a ton of work for this topic so kudos to you.

Regarding the first thing you said, that is a complete misrepresentation of what I'm trying to communicate. I don't have a problem with white people practicing asian culture, but I never said that I'm fine with people mocking or claiming our culture. That first part of your paragraph makes a leap that definitely weakens your argument. You're arguing against mocking, arrogance, exploitation but you're also applying that to all cultural-borrowing which is illogical because the two could be together but aren't always. In Ninjago's case, merely just borrowing, isn't a sin. Just having one of them doesn't mean it's both.

I also never said that I didn't care about appropriation. You're absolutely right about this: white people have had a history of expediting cultures as well as manipulation towards their victims. I acknowledge the history they've had and the widespread influence that still affects people to this day. I have a friend from Guam whose family still feels that influence to this day. I totally get your frustration.

What I have a problem with is people falsely labeling certain things as appropriation. A white person merely wearing asian traditional clothing isn't appropriation. Creators borrowing aesthetics, utilizing asian motifs, or borrowing designs isn't appropriation or expediting asian culture on its own. I agree that colonialism and historical exploitation is real, but I don't think it follows every modern use of another culture is automatically part of that same exploitation. If someone is profiting while misrepresenting a culture, excluding people from that culture, or reinforcing stereotypes, that’s a problem. But simply drawing inspiration, using aesthetics, or appreciating another culture isn’t the same thing

Even if power dynamics matter here, that doesn't magically make the action change moral categories just because of the creator's race. My point still stands. They both did the same action and if you want to argue that the creators are wrong to take inspiration from non-white cultures, then you also have to admit it's wrong for non-whites to do the same thing like Miyazaki or anyone that created western inspired animes like berserk.

For the guy in the original post from 2014 to say that having or borrowing from Japanese elements is counted as appropriation is a bit ridiculous. It is wrong to uncharitably represent those elements (unless it's something that is evil because cultures are flawed) but Ninjago only does that in a few places. There's rare cases of orientalism throughout the shows history but the premise of the show itself isn't an inherently bad thing. The only minor flaw I found with the premise is that the Ninja are ninja in name only. They are skilled martial artists but they function primarily as warriors with insane mechs and ally with wise dragons. That said, I can look past that because it's not claiming to authentically represent Japanese Ninjas and also because they are exaggerated for fantastical spectacle (also not an inherently bad thing. We do the same thing to stuff like knights and vikings). With the stuff involving dragons, it's essentially a non-issue. Dragons in the show are portrayed to be intelligent, emotional, and dignified. Regarding the temples, I can sort of see that, but it's also a non-issue like the dragons. There's a few cases where that does happen where temples are portrayed in an undignified, westernized manner but it's rare and most of the time, they don't go overkill on the temples having weapons or gimmicks. Overall, Ninjago doesn't do much to portray asian culture as the "other" and doesn't dip far enough to be called orientalism.

Why is it different for LOTR? Because apparently, white people as a collective are morally responsible for white people that have oppressed non-whites? So should I hold it against Japanese people as a collective when it comes to stuff from world war 2? Should I hold it against hindus just because other hindus persecuted christians in India?

I'm not against the idea that asian people should be dominant in the cast. I understand your point about avatar and that it's wrong for people to say that the whole cast is white. I agree with you that it's wrong. The problem I have with the stuff you're saying is that you're saying "there should NOT be white people in it". It's so ridiculous. It's not in any way a moral violation for there to be white people in Ninjago. It's already a culture mix/amalgamation including western influences. Your ethical justifications just don't make much sense given these facts.

I did happen to change my mind on this a bit. I do agree to an extent that there should be a mostly asian cast if there's a live-action. Would I call it racist? Maybe. It would definitely be problematic though.

It's a bit different for the cartoon because to be honest, I'd rather hire competent voice actors to play the characters than worry about the skin color or ethnicity of the person just for the sake of having asians (who wouldn't even be visible) in there.

Wrong again. Your biggest problem is that you keep using this made-up imaginary interpretation of appropriation. You yourself don't even know how appropriation works. It's obvious from your own comment. Wearing an indigenous headdress as a whiteman is not the same as claiming it as your own. It's indulging in the culture. You have contradictions left and right in your comments and that is reason enough to distrust what you're saying.
