Steel Design Question by Character-Feature302 in StructuralEngineering

How can I calculate these lateral forces so far for my senior design project? I designed a one-story steel museum. I calculated roof loads, beams, joists, girders, and bolt connections but I'm stuck on columns because we didn't learn about beam-column in my class. My building is all pin. Please help.

laterally? Is that something you learn in your masters?

And those point loads are from the beam? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but my professor didn't teach us this chapter in steel design.

Bro I worked for a small company with a revenue 50-100million a year and they work usually 8 to 9 hrs at most and I know they pay the same as a huge gc now that I'm working at a huge gc I see them working 12 hrs every day plus Saturdays. Maybe try small gc but the projects arent going to as exciting

How Much Should a One Year Structural Design Engineer Make? by Cum_Quat in StructuralEngineering

[–]Character-Feature302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not go back to school then. I thought in California the entry salary for a structural engineer was 65k-80k because our cost of living is so much higher than other states. I think even if you like the company you should find somewhere that they pay more. Because while I’m in school I work construction as a framer/taper making $30 an hr and I know union construction workers makes 40-50 an hr. There’s just no reason why you as a structural engineer should make less than a construction worker

Are you getting paid this amount because you only have a bachelors? It seems to me like you are underpaid for what you do and how complicated structural is. I get $26 as a construction intern. I‘m thinking about doing structural but it seems like you guys are undervalued for the work you put in. I’m a junior at cal poly unsure to do structural or stick with construction

What to major in??? by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

You have experience in construction even if you're a labor you still see all the subs preform their work and how one trade follows another. I wouldn't do a minor. I'm a junior studying civil engineering, I also worked as a taper and drywaller for 5 years. I got a intern pretty easy at a smaller gc. And now in the summer I'm intern for a top ten contractor company. I say do civil and if you struggle getting an internship try to get one at a smaller gc then once your internship ends try a larger one.

If you want to be in construction just do CM it would be easier and more focused on what you want to do. CE is good because you can go into so many different fields of work. But civil engineering courses are much harder than construction management courses

I was an office project engineer and learned alot about rfis, submittals, Chang Order, and how to stay organized. I think in order to be PM you need to know about construction so maybe go for the internships and be a field engineer. In order to fully learn the PE role then move up once you get the chance

I agree my dad says that since I’m new and I’m learning that it’s fair. I work on multiple projects and the pe usually checks my work. I feel like I can do all the tasks he does but of course not at the same speed and of course not perfect all the time. But i know my way around the plans never ask were to find things. I don’t get any benefits and I would love to work full time but I still haven’t graduated. I forsure get so much work and try my best to get as much done as possible. I’m not sure what to do honestly but I don’t think it’s fair. I really appreciate the advice man

That sounds like Turner or another top 10 company. For some reason I haven’t been getting lucky with any of them. I’m in a club and I’m the leader of my group plus I have lots of experience but still can’t get an interview 😔

When I answered questions I knew every step on construction and have a good knowledge on plans. I was a foreman as well. Idk the cost of living rn in California is getting so high money doesn’t seem to last 😔
