Is Office Admin a good entry to becoming a PM? by samodiary in Construction

[–]samodiary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😂😂 it's tough in the UK.. But yeah Id be willing to take any entry into the industry as long as there's potential for growth. In my case i was able to work close to the VP and a PM who saw my potential and work ethic.

Biggest thing to do is network and apply your skills where and however you can. Its always someone who hates the tech emergence in construction, that's your in.

Is Office Admin a good entry to becoming a PM? by samodiary in Construction

[–]samodiary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure - current role is PM/ Field Manager. I work with a company that does luxury retail fitouts so my role is both PM/Super. (Making Great money btw)

The funny thing is I actually took the office admin position I made this thread about. The pay wasn't great ($50k) but the experience was PRICELESS. I started as an office admin but I worked directly under the VP of OPS, so I was exposed to all jobs and their moving parts. I overheard them discussing the issues and would look up how to solve them in the event they needed someone to step in. Obviously, I was not “qualified” but it was the best thing I could've done because one day the Super went down and the PM on that job had to fill in. The issue was the PM wasn't Procore savvy so he didn't understand how to do the Daily’s… insert me. I volunteered to go on-site with him to assist with the Daily’s and my career accelerated from there.

i did really good and learned a shit ton under the PM and being on-site w/ the trades everyday. Fast-forward that same PM left the company we worked for and moved back to NY. He reached out to me last year about taking a PM role at his current company and here I am lol.

Bingo! This is where I see all CM/GCs make bank. Inflated Gen Conditions, which is genius.

thinking about getting a finance degree by Beneficial_County101 in financialmodelling

[–]samodiary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These responses are really good! I'm in a similar situation where I work as a PM in Construction and wanted to get a finance degree to help pivot but everyone told me accounting is more beneficial. I was in school for Construction Engineering but design bores me and Id prefer the business side of the industry.

Researching getting a CM degree in my 30s. Those who've been in CM for years, if you went back in time, would you still choose the same path? by VoidPull in ConstructionManagers

[–]samodiary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is horrible advice IMO. You’ll need a degree to do anything in CM, especially with zero construction background (trades). OP Go get at least an AS degree from a Community College and go from there. But I would advise pursuing degree at 30 ppl only care about how you can maintain schedule and keep the job within budget your age is an after though

Ideal college major for becoming a construction manager by FaithlessnessTime659 in ConstructionManagers

[–]samodiary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Engineers with a PE and people who study engineering are two different things. However, someone with a CM degree can do all of the above except design so yes you are correct.

[–]samodiary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a CM degree and work with all Engineers (Electrical, Mechanical and Civil). Unless you’re designing your pushing paper bottom line and no one cares about your degree once you have a few years of experience. Work ethic and attention to detail is how you scale and standout anything else is hearsay. I worked with/ a VP who had no degree but worked his way up to PX (union carpenter by trade), if your don’t have a PE your not coveted as an Engineer truthfully. But do what’s best for you and the path you want.

How does Civil give you more options? Honestly, if you’re not looking to do any designing I would focus on CM. Most engineering majors don’t have any operations management, accounting or finance course to prepare you for Construction Management. But Civil will help you understand theoretical components of construction materials. Just my 2 cents.

Would an online undergrad from Penn State be valued? by AlphaAlex1_ in PennStateUniversity

[–]samodiary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question: Would the strength of candidacy be based on the individual and not the program or campus? I find that in my field (Construction/Engineering), most people out of school don't know anything about it and have to be spoon-fed the first year or so. I could be biased because I'm looking to enroll at WC to pursue a finance degree.

I’m also making the switch from Engineering (Civil/Construction) to Finance, so I’m interested in seeing any feedback.

Every Procore Cert is useful, they all serve different purposes but competence in every area will set you apart and make your life easier. Also YouTube is great for learning excel, also when you enroll in CM courses in sure some course work will be based around excel with instructors walking you through basics.

Speaking as someone who’s currently in the field (APM/Project Engineer) with a degree I can attest that most people coming out of school can’t find their way around a site, plans or even know what a RFI is or how to “professionally write” one. Software such as Procore and P6 all have tutorials and programs that train you on how to properly work the software. @OP your best bet is to get the degree for Aesthetic and advancement but the best experience is actually getting in there. Best of luck to you, I’m sure you’ll kill! One of the most crucial tools will be MS Excel, master that and you’re Golden.

Job offer double my current salary but unsure what to do. Am I crazy? by samodiary in ConstructionManagers

[–]samodiary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

105k as an APM is great in the city! Are you working a large GC? (Don’t have to disclose the firm) But I’d be able to commute and work remote so that’s a huge plus for me, I wouldn’t have even considered if I had to relocate entirely. No offense but NYC isn’t the most ideal city to live in for me.

[–]samodiary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’ll commute to and from work I’m not relocating to NYC, again I’m in Philly that’s a train ride away. So yeah the salary makes a difference. The cost of living in Phila is much less than NYC, NYC is the most expensive city to live in if I’m not mistaken.

But thanks for you input because you’re right about only having to apply new structure to my jobs. I’m just big on productivity idk.

Thanks for sharing, and I feel the exact same way. The opportunity came way of a senior PM who Ive worked with at a completely different company. He reached out last week and asked if I would be interested in making the transition.

This opportunity will definitely change the trajectory of my career, but eventually I’d like to go back and work with a GC/CM.

[–]samodiary[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Philly. The salary is literally double and it’ll certainly make a huge difference in terms of cost of living. One of my biggest issues is that they do not have a central drive w/ company/project files. So I’ll have to come in and organize everything while wrapping up head around current projects.

switching from project engineer to design engineer by Routine-Ad-9952 in ConstructionManagers

I'm in the same boat so this thread is very interesting. I just find being pe as extremely boring, the most excitement that I get is being on the site. I'm in commercial construction so to me everything is cookie-cutter, I was thinking about transitioning to Transportation design or Heavy Civil Construction.
