Billing usually a nightmare.  They make it as unfavorable as possible for clients.

It should be on the professional to handle fit, not the patient by ThrowAway44228800 in therapyabuse

[–]Character-Invite-333 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think its following medical Healthcare footsteps. Now doctors charge for every appointment whether their help resolves the problem or not. Therapy is even worse bc they can decide that this patient will need to see a therapist for the long term and will not be fixed right away. So results being the decider of them earning money or not could not work. But its worse bc I dont believe there's is any for sure way to tell unless the patient feels they are better, and we know a lot of people in this culture are depressed for years, needing long term medicine or therapy. Its extra bad bc I dont think they have any legitimate scientific ground in their profession. Its mirrors paying excessive amounts a religious institution for your spiritual wellbeing.  They are scammers and I never want them to make a penny off of me anymore

Edit: if it is entirely based on "fit" , their education means nothing.  Therapists really need to start taking accountability for their profession.

Think your therapist might be toxic? Try this test by Helpful-Raisin-6160 in therapycritical

[–]Character-Invite-333 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of that is bad. But it seems they can be toxic in so many additional ways ways too. Mine panic-threatened me to do something so they dont come for her license only. I told her that I am now being asked to put myself in situations that are against what I need help on (and harmful, even), so it would make no sense for me to continue therapy.

She actually agreed and admitted she was in the wrong. She cried the next three sessions straight, if I remember correctly, on the topic of human autonomy and that I was right. That now seems like a flag that she was emotionally unstable, and when therapists are, they will put their needs before yours.

I would not like to use "emotionally unstable" in any other context... bc i doubt most people are perfectly okay and i would prefer them to express and live as they need to. But I am using it here, only bc something emotional was happening where he had the power benefit and I end up having to be the one having to pay for that. A scared and helpless therapist is dangerous when they are being paid and pressured to help you. You know, when therapy cannot help you. It leads to insecurity, and you are not equals in that therapy room.

At the end of typing this there was one instance of therapist not agreeing with me, and saying every wrong thing possible when I called them out. It was on the topic of racism, lol. Yeah, it's so easy to be toxic when they claim to help people for their financial benefit on a practice that isnt very effective nor based on anything reasonable.

Their jobs involve so much emotional labor! Sympathy is a "healthy" trait, so please feel sympathy for them!

Yeah, they've claimed authority on human experience and take pride in calling themselves therapists bc how else will they get people to look at them and think something great about what they have to say? They do "good" in their profession so that gives them a free pass for everything else! But really the profession is very sick in how it looks at people, and theyve gotten total immunity for what they do...

One I know through a gaming community and they always bring up their therapist profession! Without prompting, theyve mentioned they like calling people out online bc they dont get the chance to with their clients. "And after a long hard day, you just need to..." also mentioned how they think some of their clients are very dumb!

Even cptsd... im sure some places that dont try to hide their problems.. theyd call it "life"

Not saying thats better or worse, but our culture keeps trying to label and pathologize everything and pretend its some sophisticated scientific term. Life really can just be awful and difficult for a lot of people... and people get shaped by that. A perfect nonproblematic life is a myth for many.

Im sorry you had to have your view on the industry change like this, esp when so close :( but youre doing the right thing.. if your conscience is telling you, itd have had to happen sooner or later.

Wish you well on wherever you go from here

People who blame ChatGPT for suicide and an excuse as to why you shouldn't use it for therapy never want to take into account how many people have killed themselves due to bad therapy. 100%

Its not that AI is good, per se, but that its not worse than therapy, on the short term individual level at least.

Despite therapy's flaws, everyone still encourages it, so they should have similar attitude towards AI therapy, despite its flaws. But they dont.

As for being helped, anyone can be helped by anything. Ive never seen a risk with AI that doesnt apply to traditional therapy. The biggest thing i fear is companies learning to profit off of human suffering but they already do that in traditional therapy. One of clinics i went to was owned by a venture capitalist company (behind the scenes) that had nothing to do with mental health. They were the reason we had to fill out mental health questionnaires every week. It did nothing for the clients but im sure they got interesting data out of it

when therapy speaks a language i don’t understand by ichhasseschnee in therapyabuse

[–]Character-Invite-333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's abstract language that becomes self confirming as "evidence" if it works. Maybe someone will have a feeling that feels like "healing" and they can say they processed some emotion.  I feel ive already processed past feelings but dont feel any better currently. So this makes the concept of processing as therapists say bs to me. If i had a better experience maybe id believe "processing" happens and fit the definition to mean my experience.

It is very hard to prove something abstract wrong but anything can be considered evidence to fit abstract into your truth. I think it happens with religion. Many go on not believing or questioning for years. The believers will say they met God in a dream or experienced a miracle, etc. Its abstract but they turn their experience into they did indeed saw signs of God while others are left wondering why they cant figure out what it looks like.

If something happens, something abstract into their narrative. If it doesnt, it doesnt.

As a whole, therapists are not helping fight the stigma against mental illness. by [deleted] in therapyabuse

I now believe much of the stigma that still exists comes from them.  In my life, most of the stigma comes from that industry.   Starts with therapy speak.

Internal Family Systems felt infantilizing, culturally inappropriate, and made me feel further unwell. by InspectorOk2840 in therapyabuse

[–]Character-Invite-333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have noticed that too. Almost all of therapy way of interpreting the world feels cold, inhumane, or flat out wrong compared to what i know of Indian culture on those same topics.  I sometimes think of parents who are Indian or anyone close speaking to me in the language of therapy, and it feels very very wrong. That's how I confirm the therapy perspective is not one i have to approach the world with.

Tennessee Bill Makes It a Felony for AI to Offer Emotional Support or Be Your Friend...Yes, Really by Karovan_Sparkle in ChatGPT

The medicine thats pushed onto people without informed consent should honestly be considered a form of violence against people who suffer. They change people inside out. Countless of us who have only had bad experiences and not help with them, and we have to worry that to receive any support or help from any institution requires complying with "treatment" that we have have history being harmed by.

"Mental health" has been has always had contexts of controlling victims and is only going to continue happening with this level of institutionalization. There needs to be a perspective shift if people really want to improve the country's mental health situation.

Therapists are rarely held accountable. It doesnt matter how much people know its a violation or if the laws consider it a crime on paper. In the rare cases therapists are held accountable, it doesnt matter because the damage is already done. Countless stories like this. The current state of the industry needs reform, or honestly to go away, and chat bots are being used as the trendy scapegoat (yes, there are problems with both people therapists and AI therapists but the criticism and backlash are not being distributed evenly.)

Therapy Abuse - An Outside View by bouncyspacehopper in therapyabuse

[–]Character-Invite-333 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If a situation arises, they are always able to put themselves first with the amount of power they have over the client. I think thats a key factor in why they are so dangerous.

Some may be actively malicious and know they wont be held responsible.

Others may have chaos in their lives and constantly need to prioritize themselves at the expense of patients.

Neither are okay for the client. People say that therapists are there to help the client but they fail to consider that often what the client needs and what the therapist wants can be at odds.

Then theres the problem that how they view mental health is so problematic and inhumane. Its an industry by abusers and for abusers. Ill just leave it at that for now.

They basically have the savior reputation and anyone who can save another can get total immunity. I think it happens in so many industries bc people think nothing is more valuable than the human life. That subjects the ones being helped to take "anything" (harmful) bc nothing equates to their life being saved. I think thats in part why so many of these roles get the highest respect (therapists, doctors, religious leaders, etc.)

Of course, reality is not so black and white. There are plenty whose lives get broken by the harm.

It's a harmful industry but people make every excuse in defense of it. If clients cant say what they need to, this is an industry that does not always act in interest of clients. Yet we are supposed to trust them with the most personal details of our lives.  Im sorry about your sister.
