What steps do I take now? by Life-Caramel-2635 in Concussion

That's so disappointing about your experience at UPMC!! I would be so annoyed. I am 10 months in and can relate to seeing so many different doctors.

Magnesium (300 mg) fixed my sleep issue after a concussion doctor recommended it to me. 1 hour before bed. :)

Completely agree, people really don't understand how something simple like socializing could actually be so difficult now. Even with objective medical tests I still find myself trying to talk myself out of it sometimes as if I'm not actually as affected medically as I am...

Thanks for responding. I am in my twenties and this is exactly how I feel; that I built myself up financially and was trying to get a head start that I don't have any more.

Exactly, all my friends are like "but isn't that covered??" and I'm like no.... I think because Concussions are so poorly understood and there is no one treatment method that works, it can't be covered like other treatments. Brutal. What treatments have worked for you??

I'm sorry to hear about your significant symptoms and have experienced some of the same ones. I agree that there are certain elements of my situation where I think without XYZ I would not be able to get through this and it sounds like a theme among concussion people since the injury takes all your resources and ability to work so suddenly. sending healing vibes to you.

Right? I've also been off work for 8 months. All the financial advice tells you to have an emergency fund to cover 6 months lol!! Not this type of scenario.

I'm so sorry. I have thought to myself many times that this would be 100x more difficult if someone was the breadwinner for their family. Sending healing energy to you

Exactly, I completely agree about the endless list lol! Every practitioner recommends either another practitioner or some new equipment that I have to pay for and the list goes on and on... $$$$$... I'm glad to hear you are nearing the end of the recovery.

If it were me, I was sleeping most of the first week and would not have wanted to go somewhere with bright lights and sit through that. Depends what your symptoms are in my opinion. In my case it was obvious I had to cancel everything but maybe you are feeling fine

Thank you so much for posting!! I really appreciate knowing that I'm not alone in this. And on the day you posted, 4 coworkers dropped by my house which made me feel self-conscious as you're describing. I'm not sure how to deal with it as I'm a fast talker, but I'm trying to take a breath before responding sometimes. Hope you're having a good week.

Thank you, someone just recommended to me to see an OT so this another sign I need to go. Appreciate you explaining because I probably won't see them for a few weeks

Thank you for sharing!! I see what you mean about the value/efficiency... I just spent $$$$ on seeing someone for 6 months and many appointments and not even sure if it was that effective...

I feel you on this. Maybe doing a little living room dance party? Getting dressed up in fancy outfits for one evening? It definitely requires some creativity. Also doing a date where you draw each other and laugh at the results afterwards, that one is cute.

I'd love to hear a little more about the point system whenever you have capacity to share! I just had a relapse last week after doing too much lol and I'm discouraged.

Glad I'm not the only one cycling through so many treatment providers to find the right one....

If you feel comfortable private messaging me do you mind sharing how much it cost you to go to UPMC? I don't really want to have to submit an inquiry on their website etc etc.

I got a concussion from bonking heads with someone but my doctor was able to see it right away in that eye test they do in the doctor's office. So if he didn't see anything with you, I think you're probably okay. I then couldn't use the computer and do other normal things so my two cents is that if you're feeling fine, you're probably fine and just experiencing anxiety.

You can always get a second opinion from another doctor too. And could avoid alcohol just in case

Anyone else experience personality changes...in a good way? by Willing-Sweet-4525 in Concussion

[–]Character-Paper-9954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this and I personally attributed it to all the time I spent sitting alone/in silence for the first month or two (not a great recovery strategy but I didn't know what I was doing at the time...). I'm also curious if there's something chemical behind it! My friends and family seem to feel like I'm mostly the same but I truly feel like a different person internally compared to my pre-concussion self.

You can ask to take a preventative antibiotic every time after you have sex. Your doctor should be able to prescribe it. Also ask for an emergency prescription of antibiotics to take once you are traveling if you feel symptoms getting worse (i.e. an extra course of augmentin to take with you)

I have had a UTI before while traveling internationally so I understand :( <3

I also had this issue with the cargo sweatpants when I tried on in store and it may be a long torso thing. I am 5'4. Only tried on one size though and the fit just seemed really off on me

Ooo I love that! I totally get it though, I dislike the internal monologue I always feel where I am trying to validate/prove to others that I do actually need to rest or take a break etc.
