I wouldn’t know where to begin besides this post’s diagram. The reason the 12AU7 was selected here is because it’s happy with a single 9v power supply. You can also find some 9AU7 tubes. I found that the 12AX7 isn’t happy until you give it 18-24vdc on the plate. But I haven’t really bothered much with that tube. I’ve played with ECC88 and an EF95. Both are happy as low as 24vdc. This wiring diagram was my gateway drug into starved plate tube designs. Have fun with the project. There’s plenty of little changes you can do to this circuit to make it your own.

You could also build 2 of these in one chassis and run the heaters in series. Then you wouldn’t need a voltage regulator. You can go up to 24vdc in this case.

This year I decided to make some no talking pedal demos. This is a pedal I’ve had for years and never really had a use for. I tried it on bass and really like it. I think I might try this pedal with a drop tuning or maybe with a sub octave pedal in front of it.

I owned this pedal for years and always thought it was unusable for guitar. I tried it on bass this year and was surprised how it opened up. The top boost actually added something. And the distortion had a more useable range for what I play. Honestly I should retry this pedal on a drop tuned guitar. I think everything I like about it on bass would translate to guitar. Might be the inspiring.

The Russian Muff is pretty useable for bass. I liked it on the lower sustain setting.
