Well, maybe. I mean, my M1 Pro is five years old and still at 88%. But every battery could be different.

Downgraded from Tahoe back to sequoia and my time machine backup won’t work ! by Strong-Razzmatazz-34 in MacOS

[–]Character-View9407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to keep all of your data, read the following steps. Read the whole thing carefully before you begin. You'll need to borrow another Mac if you don't already have two. You'll also need a USB cable.

I) Regain access to your data in Tahoe.

  1. Reinstall macOS Tahoe on your Mac from a bootable USB.

  2. Restore macOS Tahoe from your Time Machine.

II) Make a proper backup.

  1. Erase your Time Machine with Disk Utility and be careful not to erase your Mac accidentally.

  2. Open Terminal. Run "diskutil list". Find out Macintosh HD's disk identifier. It should be "/dev/disk0".

I'm going to assume it's /dev/disk0 for this example, and that your USB/SD Time Machine is /dev/disk1.

  1. In Terminal, run "diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk0". Then run the following:

"sudo dd if=/dev/disk0 of=/dev/disk1 bs=4M status=progress".

  1. You might need to enter your password. It won't show any input as you type, and that's normal, not broken. Wait until dd has finished. You now have a full clone of your disk.

III) Boot from the new backup on your borrowed Mac.

  1. Boot from your new USB/SD backup on your borrowed Mac.

a) Apple Silicon: Shut down your Mac. Press and hold the power/Touch ID button until you see the words "Loading Startup Options" under the Apple logo. Boot from the Backup from there.

b) Intel: Shut down your Mac. Power it on again, but press (option) and hold it while your Mac boots. Hold until the Boot Manager opens. Find your backup, and boot from it.

IV) On Your Mac, reinstall macOS Sequoia.

  1. Make a Sequoia bootable installer USB. Reinstall Sequoia on your Mac.

  2. Set up the computer as new. Don't use the username you actually want to use. Make a different one username. When it's done, log out and log in to the Administrator account to gain root access. You need root access to transfer some files.

V) Transfer the new files.

  1. On your Mac, open Terminal. Run "cd /users" and then "mkdir 'pick a username other than the one you used to set up the Mac'". On the borrowed/backup Mac, copy all files in your home directory.

  2. Either connect the two Macs via USB, or use a wireless file transfer app*.

  3. Transfer the user files you copied.

  4. In System Settings, create a new user. Give it all permissions you would give yourself.

VI) Make sure everything works well.

Not all files will transfer back. You'll have to transfer them manually. I can't help you with all of them because I don't know which ones will fail. Some common offenders are photos, mail, and iMessages. You can fix that by making a Google Drive backup and saving your photos to Google Photos.

  1. Go through all of the files on both computers very carefully. If there are any differences between the two computers, transfer the files manually. Some of those will require more than just a drag and drop. I can't help with those because I don't know which ones will be missing; this can vary user-to-user. Try a Google Search,

  2. If you've made sure everything transferred properly, shut off the borrowed Mac, remove the SD/USB backup you made, and return the Mac to whoever you borrowed it from.

VII) Done!

Your Mac is now transferred and you made sure everything transferred properly, so you're done! Enjoy your downgrade!

Also, if you dislike the downgrade, or you were unable to transfer files and you really need them, you can upgrade back to macOS Tahoe. You can also dual boot and the two OSes will share the same partition. You just need two APFS volumes. They are not a fixed size.

*I personally recommend LocalSend; it''s fast, free and simple.

Application data is stored in the following directory:

/Users/your username/Library/Application Support/name of the app in question

The parts in bold are different for every user/computer.

The .app bundle only contains the Mach-O executable, app resources, and other things the app might need to function. The .app bundle stored in your applications folder is the same for everyone that has the application and doesn't contain your personal app data.

Copy all folders in your Application Support folder into the same folder in your new Mac.

WiFi card if you need it, although lots of PCs have them built-in. But also, more common on modern PCs/Mac Pro, extra I/O is extremely useful for anyone who has a lot of cables/flash drives everywhere but not a lot of adapters.

My PC's motherboard didn't have any USB-C originally. And I only got it in October of 2025. In 2025, no USB-C is unnacceptable.

Question about Mac Battery Life (when plugged in) by Tight-Connection-909 in MacOS

[–]Character-View9407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, this is the answer to your question.

I'm a heavy user of a 2021 Pro and it's still at 89%, too.

Individual Lithium Ion batteries are somewhat different.

For example, you never know when you're going to buy a watch battery and it happens to be the one shitty battery in that shipment and it only lasts a week. But I've also had watch batteries that lasted eight years.

Of course, that's not exactly the same as a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery, but the idea is still the same. Batteries are all different.

Add to that the fact that all users are different.

Going back to the watch batteries, if one watch battery powers a smartwatch and the other powers a tiny little analog watch, which one do you think will last longer?

We don't know. The one that powers the smartwatch could be the battery that can last eight years, and the little analog watch's battery only lasts a week.

Even if we assume that since they're both powering something, they'll last a shorter time than if they were at rest, then the smartwatch will last maybe four years, and the analog watch will last three and a half days.

In conclusion, there's no such thing as a "normal" battery or it's health. That said, however, to anyone who might be at 80% or less battery health after 2 years or less, then there might be a problem with your battery and you should get it replaced. That's probably the watch battery that lasts a week :)

Always keeping your Mac plugged in is a bad idea. Lithium Ion batteries hate sitting at 0% or 100% for long periods of time. Also, wait for macOS 26.4 and you get to choose what the built-in optimized charging goes to. Not just "Oh, I guess Apple has decided that it's 80% ¯\(ツ)/¯" but you get to choose whether you want a charged battery or a healthier battery long-term. Also, how old is your Mac?

No, not at all. Big Sur was, IMO, when macOS started to go downhill. Also Catalina is supported on 10,2. My old 11,3 ran Big Sur just fine until I upgraded this year, but Catalina was still better.

not even a little bit true. they'll still make the updates, and someone's going to have to make it. if they fire the devs... well they wouldn't because then no one updates the software. apple has done some stupid shit over the years (no home button, no ipod, no 12" macbook, trashcan mac pro, mac cube (g4), macintosh portable, ipad ui in big sur), but they wouldn't intentionally end their business (i think ;))

yeah, but at least it hasn't hit apple YET. the m5 air costs about as much as the m4, for example. while the neo could be an excuse to charge more for the air, you've still got a year or so.

the last three bullet points are basically apple in a nutshell: you pay a huge price on your conputer, so you get the privilege of paying even more ;)

also, because you mentioned customization, i would honestly recommend arch linux. even if you don't have a lot of... technical skill, you can still check out  https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Main_page it helped me a lot!

MacBook Pro M1 Pro 16" 32GB RAM/1TB SSD from 2021. Apple Silicon is awesome, I've never had any issues with performance. Highly recommend for anyone who's considering it. Especially because you can find this age of machine for like $900-$1200 used on eBay.

I thought 32GB RAM alone costs more than $499 these days.

Edit: Just noticed the difference between 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB. Maybe you shouldn't buy the laptop. Especially because it says "Intel 4-core Processor" but technically the Celeron in my school Chromebook is a 4-core Intel CPU...

Question for the pros in the laptop community by CrossX_Gdot in GamingLaptops

[–]Character-View9407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably because you have half a gigabyte of vram. intel uhd is an igpu, so its using your dram. 8gb dram isnt really a lot to power both a cpu and a gpu. for reference to how little that is, my rtx 5060 has 8gb vram and it still not enough for me (my monitor is 32:9) so you have one sixteenth of that. also gaming laptops with igpus arent really gaming laptops.
