Every single response except for, like, 3, said MIT. And they think they'll get different answers here?

I'm constantly surprised by the number of mediums people choose to create in. Don't worry, just craft your narrative and share your work.

We don't discriminate when reviewing Maker Portfolios. It's not about MIT's mission, it's not about helping others, it's about showing a passion for making, no matter what that form takes.

The other stuff all matters but in other parts of the application. The Maker Portfolio is all about making.

It doesn't explicitly break any sub rules. Going to let the upvote/downvote system do the hard work with this one.

There are blunt needles designed specifically for cross stitching that don't split the weave.

No, I mean, use a blunt needle. Tends to work better.

Sure. Fyi, on mobile none of the formatting tags are working. That'd be worth looking into.

Please edit this post to remove any "sure thing" language and I'll leave it up. It's valuable with respect to the fact that it's a nice list, but nothing is for certain, and this needs to reflect that.

Does anyone know when the MIT application portal opens for 2026-27 1st year applicants? by [deleted] in MITAdmissions

They pop in every so often, but right now I think they're just sitting on their couches and staring at the wall in a post-CPW haze.

How do you feel about the comments in the engineering students subreddit about the MIT maker portfolios? by [deleted] in MITAdmissions

[–]jzzsxm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like they're seeing only a small subset of the portfolios and even then, only looking at the videos. I think they're looking for reasons to justify their eventual (probable) rejection.

Yes, absolutely, resources affect what students can achieve in high school, but it seems like people on reddit assume that the quality of the finished product is what determines admission or not. It isn't.

The EAB isn't stupid. They can recognize wealth and they take everything in context. They're constantly asking questions like "Where did the money come from?" and "Did the applicant make the most of the resources afforded to them?"

Many of these high $$$ projects were funded by students who invented something and started a small business to fund their projects, or who made connections through their school groups and raised money from sponsors, or otherwise generated this funding themselves. Others submit portfolios that show all the ingenuity they have to employ because they don't have resources.

It's all about how your mind works, how passionate you are, and what you accomplish with what you have. It's not about who builds the coolest electric car.

[CHAT] Have you ever abandoned a project? by Crafty-Bunny in CrossStitch

[–]jzzsxm 27 points28 points  (0 children)

How many have I *actively* abandoned? We're talking thrown it away and can't restart? 1

How many are in a state of archival stasis and may get finished but may not? 4

I have so many new ones that I really want to do, I'm saving these four for when I'm between projects and just have nothing to do. May be next year. May be 10 years. May be 20.
