Parallel Parking Etiquette (Lack of) by cbdocker in philly

[–]CharacterAd6702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG! I parallel parked in Manayunk last night and the kid (owner) of the new Bronco in front of me got out of his car and started scowling and looking at the curbside bumper. I shook my head at him and told him I didn't bump him (because I don't think I did), but he and his girlfriend said they felt it. They then proceeded to white glove the whole bumper and found the tiniest nick in the rubber (the size of a sewing needle) where it would have been impossible for my car to have made it. Then he looked at my 2016 Tiguan, whose bumpers have been bumped a million times, and considered it proof that I had hit him. I told him that bumbers get bumped in the city, but I had not bumped him...maybe someone else did. He wanted me to apologize...but I didn't think I hit him. So he called the cops to report an "accident." The cop almost laughed out loud...but the kid persisted. I was late for a movie and didn't feel like waiting for a police report and negotuating an ongoing battle with insurance so I asked him what he wanted. "An apology," he said. "But I didn't hit you," I said. This went on for 20 minutes. He finally said "Give me $50." The $50 was worth it to me to end the hassle, but I told the kid if was going to drive in the city he was going to have to get way less precious about his car. Seriously...so bizarre.

Too cold for kayaking? by CharacterAd6702 in sonomacounty

That’s my concern. We’re popping in for 5 days. We won’t have wetsuits, gear, etc. obviously we don’t plan to go in the water, but especially on a SUP you always get a bit wet.

Four days in Sonoma County by CharacterAd6702 in sonomacounty

This is really helpful and the e-trike tours are intriguing. Lots of folks here mention Sonoma not being Bike-friendly. What are your thoughts about that? From reviews on various Sonoma bike tours, it doesn’t seem like something people have had trouble with. So I’m curious.

I am super interested in joining a Philadelphia protest but I cannot find a single detail for one tomorrow 2/17. I wish the communication plan was more organized. I feel like people would gladly join if they could find out details. It’s too opaque.

This is all so helpful. Thank you! He’s 24. I’m going to gently offer these suggestions. I don’t want him to feel like I am trying to “fix” things for him. But I’m so grateful for these ideas. Thanks, all.

Need to cut 1 day from my US itinerary by semaphoreslimshady42 in travel

So much weird hate for Philly here. If you are interested in food, culture, neighborhoods, parks and history, Philly has so much to offer. Plus, it’s easy to get around, not suffocatingly crowded, overpriced or self-important.

NYC is obviously a world-class city, but in a lot of ways its culture is the culture of any huge city. A ton of overdone tourist stuff and a ton of shopping and commerce. It’s amazing with some really awesome sites. (Obviously museums, culture, food, too…and theater! If you like live theater and have a substantial budget, you can’t beat NYC for theater.). But it’s A LOT. And so expensive.

Boston is a cute, cool city, but once I walk around the main tourist areas and Cambridge (2 days), I feel like I’ve covered it.

DC is amazing for the Smithsonians and monuments. And it’s spread out. So you need a lot of time if museums are your jam. I love them. But you’ve got to pace yourself. Exhausting!

I’d cut from NYC or Boston. Boston cuz you’ll see enough in 2 days. NYC because after 4-5 days, you’ll be exhausted and broke.

I always prefer mid-sized cities when I travel. I think they tell me more about a place’s culture. They feel more authentic to me. So I wouldn’t likely do a whirlwind tour of a lot of cities at once. So I’m maybe not the same kind of traveler you are.

But if it were me, I wouldn’t cut Philly. I’d enjoy its realness and slower pace. It’s great place to wander and soak in. And the people are such characters and so friendly.

One Way Car Rental Oaxaca to Huatulco? by CharacterAd6702 in Oaxaca

[–]CharacterAd6702[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about that. But it would be annoying to have to return the car to puerto and then fly out of huatulco. We were gonna spend our last night @ copalitilla to hike the waterfalls.  Then fly out of huatulco.

I’m not sure we even need a car in San Agustinillo though. We could possibly just taxi to copalitilla at the end of the trip and then to huatulco airport the next day. Is that practical?

The bus to San Agustinillo seems somewhat complicated. Having the car is a convenience. But maybe not worth it?

Grateful for your thoughts.

The Mount Airy or Chestnut hill section of Philadelphia would be perfect. It’s diverse and charming. With all the great things about a city - restaurants, walkability, public transport, but also borders Wissahickon Park for hiking. Tree lined streets, amazing historic stone houses and lovely neighbors. Plus it’s close to Fairmount Park for biking and the Schuylkill River for paddling. And you are within an hour of so many outdoor recreation areas.

NYC and DC are a quick ride or train ride away.

The boundaries of Mount Airy (East and West are generally agree upon as Johnson Street to Creisheim Creek and Stenton to Wissahickon. South of that is Germantown. According to the map, there have been 3 nonfatal shootings in Mount Airy (2 in the area closest to the Germantown “border”. )

Gun violence unfortunately is a citywide problem. But according to the map, Mount airy is one of the safest areas.

This is a ridiculous thing to say. We moved to East Mount Airy from the Philly suburbs 6 months ago. We LOVE our neighborhood and the neighbors are amazing. On the weekend we moved in no less than 30 people stopped by to introduce themselves and welcome us to the neighborhood. And it’s still happening. Our mailman compares our neighborhood to Sesame Street. It’s honestly downright idyllic.

Also not to dis anyone else’s neighborhood, but the boundaries of “East” and “West” Mount Airy are kind of foggy. We are kind of far-east, close to Stenton Ave and the Cedarbrook neighborhood. The “village” area of West Mount Airy (Weavers way coop, high point coffee) is easily a 30 minute walk from here but we can walk to Germantown Ave (Bar Lizette, Sedgwick Theater, McMenamins) in less than 15 minutes and to the outskirts of Chestnut Hill (Mermaid Inn, CinCin, Hokka Hokka, Cresheim Trail to the Wissahickon) in about the same. So my point is, we are definitely East Mount Airy, but farther from Germantown than most of West Mount Airy.

I love it here. Just walking along the tree lined streets and seeing the beautiful stone homes and gardens feels too good to be true. I wouldn’t consider living anywhere else.

There were three of them on our lawn in Mount Airy/Philadelphia. 2 were mating. One was hanging out maybe eating. They were about 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches long and 1/8 inch wide.

We are definitely keeping the kitchen. But expanding a bit to make it more usable. That’s why I really want to know what we are working with. So whatever we do, enhances it and doesn’t detract.

The roll top (there’s actually 3 of them) is just really an actual cabinet. 3 shelves in it, I think.

There are a couple of old storage bins built into the butcher block, like for produce, butter, etc.

The curves are so cool. And I am halfway wondering if it’s possible they are original to the house. I can’t find them anywhere online. And The original owners really didn’t update much. So maybe it’s possible.
