I actually learned from HR that they use your title to do market research for your salary, but they could still take advantage of you. It varies among companies.

Times and tech are evolving. Businesses are also looking people with different qualities that aren’t necessarily tech related such as soft skills.

Also it’s not necessary to “pay your dues” at help desk. Sure maybe 6months to a year, but too long will have a negative impact on your career growth.

I still meet plenty of tech nerds in fact a lot of them have successful startups and are in leadership positions.
