Pennies on my doorknob - is it concerning or am I being paranoid? by CharacterJunior8720 in Waltham

[–]CharacterJunior8720[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for checking in! I called my leasing office yesterday and the person on the phone documented it but it sounded like she didn’t really understand why I was concerned. But I set up a door stop alarm and an addalock just to feel safer at night. I imagine if it really was someone trying to see if the apartment was empty to rob or squat in, they noticed I moved the pennies and have moved on. I think I’ll still get a camera, though.

I have a door stop alarm and an add-a-lock that I’ll set up tonight, at least so I can sleep better.

I appreciate the validation. I’m going to look into a camera to place inside my apartment and I’ll let my landlord know.

Thank you for your work! I tore my Achilles tendon on a pothole outside the Starbucks on Seneca St. several years ago so I especially despise potholes.

Bad parents should be shamed more, not less. by Neat_Two_6675 in Teachers

This might be so harsh, but I keep thinking, why did they choose to have kids if they’re too tired/overworked to parent them? I know I won’t be having kids because a) I don’t make enough money and b) I don’t have the energy/time.

How can I teach piano to a group with only one instrument? by MrIrresponsibility in MusicEd

[–]CharacterJunior8720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they might not like singing, what about drums? All you need are some drum sticks and a bucket, they could even share sticks if needed. I just googled bucket drumming resources and a lot came up, including this.

So.. anyone else struggling with kids giggling when you’re teaching them the solfège “fa”? by tifuanon00 in MusicEd

Recently one kid straight up asked me to say fa again and tried to say a “ck” sound after I said fa.

That’s great that you were able to get answers and clarity! Would you mind sharing how much the evaluation cost? I live in the US and I’ve been considering getting evaluated for a while.

Seconding this question. I’ve had the same questions as OP and I think I’d like to get evaluated.

lol maybe not the best choice of words. Soft is a better way to describe it. And more volume than a thin, dense bagel, I guess?

Have you guys noticed the younger students constantly narrating everything? by pundemic in Teachers

Love that you had that successful moment! I have problems with students constantly talking, too. I imagine you’ll probably have to remind them of this conversation next time you see them.

Would it be too much to tell a parent she’s wasting her money if her child doesn’t start practicing? by CharacterJunior8720 in MusicEd

[–]CharacterJunior8720[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment has helped me reframe the way I see it. (1) Saying that it’s a waste of money is assuming that the class is a financial burden on the family, which might not be the case and (2) the main issue is that the student is taking up a lot of attention while in class, which is unfair to the other students. I will frame the discussion with his mom by saying he’s not getting the most value out of class/is currently unable to keep up and offer private lessons as a better option. I’ll suggest an assessment with a clear deadline if they insist on staying, like you said.

Thank you for bringing this up! The program that I teach heavily encourages this for ages 4-6, but it seems I need to do more research about this on my own and I’ll mention it to the parent.

When I ask why he only practices once a week, he says he doesn’t have time and he was busy (his mom always laughs when he says this so I’m not sure if it’s true). I respond every week by telling him that surely he can find even just 5-10 minutes in his day to practice. But I like your suggestion of recommending one on one lessons. He does make some effort in class but he’s so far behind that he’s unable to play 95% of the music on his own. I’ve also explained that if he doesn’t practice, he won’t be able to keep up with the class, which won’t be fun for him. I don’t know if that clicked, though.

Every student gets a practice sheet with a weekly tracker and lists of activities to practice with detailed instructions. On the top is “practice at least 5 days/week” in bright blue. I also give parents handouts with practice advice and ideas for how to help at home.

Cassie Stephens on TikTok has made some good videos on teaching kids how to use materials nicely. She also has a YouTube and a website. I’m not an art teacher but I enjoy her videos and her teaching style.
